awesome:

In its earliest years during frontier days, what is now Ithaca was briefly known by the names "The Flats" and "Sodom,"[16][2] the name of the Biblical city of sin, due to its reputation as a town of "notorious immorality",[17] because of its reputation as a place of horse racing, gambling, profanity, Sabbath breaking, and readily available liquor.

For those of you who have submitted deposits, is there any confirmation (other than seeing the money leave your bank account) or new info from Cornell after they receive it?

They send an email, but it takes a little while. You can also call and ask, which is what I did. They're very friendly, and it only takes a few minutes for them to check. Give them at least a week after you've mailed it, though.

Is there a way to submit the deposit in person? I was just wondering.. since I'll be at the ASD...

I was going to do mine in pennies . . . unless I can find a coinstar between now & ASW . . .

What are y'all doing for housing? I know some people have been snapping up good deals on apartments during ASWs, but I can't go because I'm in the wrong country. :(

I'm probably going to apply for on-campus housing, but I'm not terribly thrilled about living the dorm life again. I like separating Work from Home. I'm making inquiries online for 1BR places, but the bigger ones are certainly more tempting (and usually cheaper per person).

So if anyone's looking for a roommate for an apartment near campus, PM me please. :D

Yeah, back to dorm life for me, if I'm going to Cornell. It seemed pretty cheap, and it was easy than going up there & apartment shopping, which I definitely won't be able to do anytime soon.

But it seemed like it wasn't too bad, b/c I was going to do the meal plan there anyway. That & it's pretty convenient b/c it's right next door to the law school . . . of course, maybe that could have it's downside, seeing as you're pretty much always at school in that situation.

Has anyone actually seen the law dorm? Does it seem all right? And does anyone know how plausible the idea of living solely off the meal plan is? I'm trying to cut costs where I can.

Yes, last year I submitted my first check in-person. Lots of people did it, the tour actually stopped at the admissions office so people could talk to the financial aid people and give in their deposits. I mailed my 2nd deposit in, though.

Subway in town was 3.99 for the meal deal. That's a freakin steal, no need for a meal plan!

Financial aid information came. No grant money. I'm wondering how poor and uneducated ones parents must be to get a dime from them.

That has me somewhat pessimistic.

Looking just at the averages, they seemed pretty good, I had thought. Nearly half received a grant & the average grant was something like 14k, if I remember correctly. And yet it seems to be the conventional wisdom that Cornell is stingier than most schools regarding grant money . . .

I am right at their median scores for the class of 2010 (and a tad above on LSAT) and also didn't receive any grant money. Kind of disappointing.

Why would someone at the median receive merit money?

Are you guys talking about merit or need based aid?

Yes, I saw it. And it's absolutely terrible. Cramped, oddly hot, and made me very claustrophobic. I would definitely recommend against it if you can find something else. Obviously the upside is proximity, but with the very intimate nature of the school already, I don't get the sense that people don't feel "close" enough to the school by living away from it.

Others who went to the ASD should feel free to weigh in on this as well.

"Oddly hot" is probably considered one of its biggest strengths most of the year, I would think.
