Yes, you can use your Mac for exams at Columbia, as long as they are Intel systems that will run Windows in Boot Camp. In fact, NYU doesn't let you take exams on Boot-camped Macs; you have to buy a Windows-only laptop. One of the reasons that I chose Columbia over NYU. That said, NYU is in a more "happening" location, and they have a lovely building. But on the flip side, I have heard that the Columbia name carries further in international circles, USNWR ranking notwithstanding.

I really like Columbia btw. This forum gives the school a bad rap that it doesn't deserve.

NYU will allow Macs for next year.
So far, CLS is ahead in my book. I visited a 1L intellectual property class today. It was awesome.

That's why I'm visiting both in early April, to get a feel for each place and see. And hopefully financial aid doesn't throw a huge wrench into my "feel" decision.

I'm very much considering going to CLS (recently found out that I'm in the class of 2011), but I'm concerned about start-up money. I have to admit to not having a lot in savings or too much parental funds (currently living abroad as a Fulbrighter), and I'm not sure about making tuition deposits, apartment deposits, utilities deposits, and paying for the flight into NYC, textbooks, etc. etc. Is this a problem anyone else faces? I know that eventually grants/loans will pay for things, but how soon can we get them?

Credit card! Well, for visiting CLS for their programs (ASW and "Mondays at Columbia"), if you shoot them an email, they'll give you a subsidy of up to $200. But other than that, I have no money either, as I'm coming straight out of undergrad, so I'm prob gonna charge up the credit card for most of the trivial expenses.

With respect to tuition (which is by the far the biggest expense), it won't be due until your fin aid comes out, so you don't have to worry about paying $20k out of pocket before school starts, but I believe the $500 deposit is due before you get any aid money. I don't know about apts or textbooks though.

(I know this wasn't much of an advice or anything, but I just wanted to explain my situation) :o

True - the page from the NYU computer store that comes with the admissions packet advertises Macs with Leopard.

anyone know when/how we get our e-mail accounts?

I've already sent in my deposit but haven't heard anything since.

I think e-mail accounts came fairly late. Maybe in May or June?

I know it was referenced above, but can someone verify the pet policy (small dogs)? From the above, my understanding is that pets are allowed in unfurnished couples housing. Secondly, can someone comment upon the quality of 420 w 116th couples housing (as compared to Lenfest and the other non-Lionsgate offerings). Thanks.

Edit: this post is in response to the debriefing provided in the Mondays at Columbia thread.

As far as I know, pets are allowed in couples housing and studios, but not in shared apartments. In other words, you can have a pet as long as there are no roommates who might not be happy with it.

I don't know 420 W. 116th, so I can't comment on that.

From the pictures and talking to a friend of mine there now, they seem to be pretty good, especially considering the price. Only thing that caught me off-guard was the twin bed.

I live in one of those. It's not bad, but it depends where you end up. Most apartments (including mine) are perfectly fine, but there are a few with very small rooms.

Our apartment has three rooms, one big one (really big) and two small ones (small, but not tiny). We have a big living room, a small kitchen, a bathroom, and a small spare room. What I don't like so much is that the windows are very small, so it's quite dark inside, but otherwise it's really not bad here.

Furniture: a twin bed, a desk, and a chair. Nothing fancy, but it works.

Just did the housing application, I like that we can be specific. Housing was a big part of my final decision. Anyone else doing UAH?

I received my admission letter a couple of days ago by email. I live overseas and will thus not have access to whatever mailings CLS will send out until I get back to the US in July. Do you know if the same info is available on the Admitted Student website (enrollment form, FinAid questionnaire)? My bigger problem is that I am unable to access the admit student website with the generic login info in the admit letter. Anybody else having this problem or do you think it's because I'm trying to access it from abroad?

I'm abroad too, so I've been reliant on the website for information. Until the last few days, I've had no trouble getting on it. Now, it just takes me back to the login screen. Hopefully they'll fix it?

I had that login problem at the beginning of last week- email the admissions office and let them know, and they will fix it.
