Re: Columbia Law Class of 2011
Lockers will be clear once the school year begins. I don't remember exactly how it works, but it wasn't before orientation, so you don't have to worry about it. At some point they tell you when you can go online (I think it was the first day of orientation) to pick a locker and sign up for it.
As for e-mail: officially we only have the ab1234@columbia.edu addresses. The other ones were (re-)instated this year (in the middle of the year). They warned us that ab1234 would still be our official address, the other is merely a redirect, for the time that we are students. In practice this means that you can use ab1234@columbia.edu and Andrew.Baker@law.columbia.edu interchangeably, but once you graduate, you lose the latter.
I suppose it will be the same for current 1Ls, but the two addresses may not both be available right away.

New, thanks for clearing up the email thing for me.
Another random question. Which classes will we be taking fall semester?
Random aside- I'm looking at the online curriculum guide (yes, im a nerd, but not nerdy enough to figure out how to divide between fall and spring terms) and its kinda ridiculous that jack greenberg and marvin chirelstein are teaching 1L classes..ridiculous in the best way possible, if I get them.

Re: Columbia Law Class of 2011
If I understand it correctly, this year will be somewhat different from last for some of the incoming 1Ls. Some will have CivPro, Contracts, and Torts in Fall (and Crim Law, Con Law, Property, and an elective in Spring); others will have the same schedule with Torts and Con Law switched. (This has something to do with scheduling. This way there are enough professors to teach both subjects.)
As for the professors, there are many others, i.e. beside Jack Greenberg and Marvin Chirelstein, that are quite famous and do teach 1L classes.

Re: Columbia Law Class of 2011
I have some random housing questions:
1. Do kitchens in furnished apts come with microwaves?
2. How much can we expect our rent to increase by per year?
3. The UAH website says something about students having to provide rugs that cover 80% of the apt floor area, does that mean we have to get our own carpeting?
Thanks.

1. Yes.
2. Don't know. This year was something like 4%, but they say there is no rule and it depends on all sorts of things.
3. In theory yes, but it's not enforced. When I signed my lease they told me the provision is there so that they can enforce it if they need to. That means, if your downstairs neighbors are complaining about noise, they can tell you to cover your floor with rugs. But absent complaints, nobody checks and nobody cares.

Elizabeth Grainger, the housing guru of CLS, just posted a notice on the AdmitNet housing forum. It's reassuring.

I saw her name in the forum, and for some unexplainable reason I felt starstruck. I don't know anything about the woman, but her reputation definitely precedes her...caits wrote:Elizabeth Grainger, the housing guru of CLS, just posted a notice on the AdmitNet housing forum. It's reassuring.

Are our studios/apartments furnished or unfurnished? If it varies, anyone know which buildings are furnished?

You guys should all be praising God that you have to decide b/w NYU and CLS. I'd give my left nut to get accepted to either of those schools.

Housing application approved! Does this mean I can expect my offer today or tomorrow?
And this has probably been covered many times, but can we sign our lease on the same day we move in?

Re: Columbia Law Class of 2011
does anyone know when our loans are disbursed? Is it the first day of orientation? First day of legal methods? or first day of regular classes? Can current students speak to how you get the remainder (living expenses) left over after tuition and fees, and how long that takes? Is there ever a painful gap period?

Re: Columbia Law Class of 2011
We have to complete an entrance interview to get Stafford and GradPlus loans, which happens during orientation, so I'm guessing the loans are disbursed at the beginning of legal methods.
Anyone else a little freaked out by the fact that not only will our pictures be used for absolutely everything school-related for the next three years, they'll be given to firms during OCI too?
