Re: Columbia Law Class of 2011
has Columbia offered any financial aid awards yet, or just financial aid info (grants and whatnot?)
i'm wondering if i forgot to do a necessary requirement of the financial aid app
also, is there a way to check on the admitted students site your financial aid package/whether or not you've completed all the required financial aid steps?

Aren't grants financial aid awards? Assuming you meant loans there, yes, they offer grant aid as well as letting you know your Stafford eligibility in the packages that people started receiving last Monday. Have you gotten a letter at all about financial aid? They don't have any financial aid checkers that I could see. Other people posting on TLS have talked about calling the office, it sounds like they'll let you know if a decision has been made on your finaid app yet. Good luck!

Good to hear about you guys joining us!
Should go without saying, but feel free to pm/post any questions about settling into NYC or the school. I'll be leaving the country in late May and might not have great internet access, but I'll be on leading up to that.

I'll be working in West Africa doing some community based human rights work, and hopefully working on putting together a note for when I come back. Then, I'll come back, and work in the human rights clinic (just found out about the latter last week... pretty pumped).

i am, Rex. UVA offered me a 63K scholly which is very enticing; on the other hand, Columbia is truly one of the elite institutions and seems to offer even more opportunities than UVA. i'm also torn between Charlottesville (very comfortable and sedate and relaxed) and New York (seems like it would be wild and exciting). in short, i'm really torn, but leaning a bit towards UVA because of the money issue.00TREX00 wrote:Tough decision Nip - am I wrong in assuming you're leaning towards UVA?
Edit - Where are you working this summer Chris?
it's really down to these two though.

That's a tough one, nip- you should totally give them a call to at least find out where your application stands...

Anyone have much of an opinion on how to pick our Stafford/GRADPlus loan distributors? Looking at the tables Columbia put on its FinAid Web site, they look pretty identical to me.

Since THE isn't lending right now I'm probably going with Access Group, conventional wisdom and the dearly departed Sock indicated that it's better to go with credit unions or nonprofits than huge conglomerate banks, and I don't have a credit union...

I read somewhere that it's a good idea to stay with the same company that you had for your undergrad loans, so I think that's what I'll do.

Caits, I do see the advantage of not going with a huge multinational bank, though I guess I've not done enough research to be convinced that Need Access isn't owned by a huge, multinational bank
Edit: Okay, I did the .01s Googling it took to learn that Need Access isn't owned by a huge, multinational bank.

The finaid director here told me something like 80-90% of students use Access Group, so I went with them. Follower, yes?
Also, I'm not as cool as Chris and will be glued to the Internet/in the U.S. for the foreseeable future, so I am also available for questioning/querying/other q-verbings.

Any suggestions on what to put in my housing request for to get the best deal. Are there any 2br appartments?

Very few 2br apartments, and as far as I know they are all reserved for couples housing. (As are most 1br apts.)

Re: Columbia Law Class of 2011
Hi guys! I'm still waiting on Harvard, but it looks like it'll be a rejection/waitlist by now. I'm still struggling in regards to the Columbia/NYU decision, but I'm heavily leaning towards Columbia...I also did my undergrad there, and I liked the neighborhood so I think it'll be a good fit. If you guys have any questions about the campus, let me know -- I hope I can be of some help!
