Blah, I have not started yet. I'm looking forward to a hellish Memorial Day weekend. What are our choices for lenders? T.H.E. or Access Group?

I actually did it all (applications and blue sheet) in about 45 minutes yesterday. I went with Access Group. I believe THE has suspended lending.

Oh good, glad to hear it is not overly time-consuming!

Is anyone planning to take advantage of LRAP?

I'm definitely keeping the option open, which is why I just took out a PLUS loan and no private ones - word is that the new CCRA won't cover those. Going through Access makes the whole process really easy.

Yes, I plan to use LRAP, so I took out PLUS loans with The Access Group as well. Sockpuppet's blog has some good info on the new federal LRAP program as well as GULC's LRAP program. I'm pretty sure that GULC professor Philip Schrag, who runs the PILS program, helped design both the GULC and the federal LRAP programs.

danko, when you filled out the PLUS application did you do all the calculations and request an exact amount? I read on GULC's page about GRADPlus loans that you can just enter "50,000" and they will do the calculations for you.

I used an exact amount, though it sounds like I didn't have to. I applied about a month ago and still haven't heard anything, but I'm guessing they process everybody at once.

scoutfinch80 wrote:Yup. They were incredibly transparent about the process, which I appreciated at the time, but in the end it totally bummed me out.

I was first notified that I was one of 60 finalists out of 500 applicants. Then I was told that I was not accepted, but was on an "extremely short wait list." They noted in that email that they often go deep into the wait list (sometimes accepting everyone), because most of the first batch of accepted scholars will pass for the Root-Tilden or the Penn PI scholarship (which - I think - are both full tuition?).

So, Prof. Schrag let me know that I was 4th on the wait list. Then 3rd. Then 2nd. Then 1st. (As people dropped out.) But then, alas, the last person accepted the last slot, so there I was at number 9.

Oh well. I still think there are plentiful PI opportunities at GULC, so I am content! Losing out on the scholly money stings though!

I'm sorry. That must have been excruciating. I managed to sneak in, though I'm pretty sure I'm not the dreaded number 8.

But you are right about the multitude of PI opportunities. I know several GULC alumni in the public interest community who have done very well in their careers (and are enthusiastic about the school), and none of them were PILS.

does anyone know how you are supposed to fund your first summer if you are doing something public interest related? I know EJF gives out $3k grants, but that's not enough to live on for three months. more loans?

also, does gov't count as public interest?

Thanks for the congrats! I was sweating it out too, and was very happy to get the call.

Government does count as public interest, with the exception of clerkships.

Some public interest placements offer stipends that could be added to the grant from EJF. Government agencies and large nonprofits are more likely than small nonprofits to offer stipends. The small nonprofit where I work does not offer stipends, but our students get the benefit of hands-on teaching and mentorship from attorneys with years of experience. That may be worth more in the end than getting paid to be one amongst many at a big firm or agency.

It could happen, and I'm sure it has. :) Either way, we will all have great public interest opportunities in school and beyond. GULC has a stellar reputation in the DC public interest community. When I tell people I work with about my school plans, they practically start gushing. And these are people who graduated from Harvard and NYU.

Anyone know when we start to get access to the gym? Orientation week? I've also perused the website quite a bit but can't find the hours for lap swimming.

Also, do we all have academic lockers? I don't remember seeing space for like 1800 lockers anywhere in the facilities...

The facilities at the Sport & Fitness Center include a lap pool, locker rooms with whirlpools, fitness area, fitness assessment room, two massage rooms, two group exercise studios, Spinning® studio, two racquetball courts, and 8,400 square feet of multi-purpose court for basketball and volleyball.
this leads me to believe that the pool is always for lap swimming, which may be why you can't find the hours. I also like how they have basketball leagues, i'm in on that.

I saw squillions of lockers in the basement of the big middle building.

Another question...any word on when we get our law.georgetown.edu email addresses? It would be sweet if we had our accounts activated at some point this summer.

Does anyone know anything about the Petworth area of DC?

Petworth is a gentrifying part of DC. Houses are being fixed up and some new restaurants and bars have opened up. But it's still a little rougher around the edges than U Street and Columbia Heights, and some blocks should be outright avoided. I'd definitely check it out in person - it really goes block by block in a lot of DC neighborhoods.

yeah, I wouldn't recommend petworth if you are new to the city. I would probably try to stay along the red line if it's your first time in and you can afford it (which you should be able to on the GULC budget - if not they allow for reasonable increases).

I second what Danko said about Petworth. If you're really close to the Georgia Ave/Petworth Metro it should be slightly gentrified... but away from that I would definitely check it out in person. It's all relative to the person and what you feel comfortable with though.

If you haven't had much interaction with minorities your comfort level may be tested. When I moved out to DC a couple years ago I lived in Edgewood (3rd and Rhode Island NE which is not even remotely gentrified) and the guys I moved out with who had led pretty sheltered lives felt pretty uncomfortable about the situation.

DC gets a bad rep. Yes some areas are dangerous, but if you have a level head and make good rational decisions you should be fine.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
