gladiator what's so bad about summers in Cville?
Hot and humid. It goes on through early September even. The football game against Duke last year in early September I believe it was 95 and humid. The Georgia Tech game in last September was extremely bad too.

eh, I lived in Florida for the first 16 years of my life, and spent another year and a half in South Carolina, I think I'll be ok.

99% sure I'll be attending -- I am waiting to send in my card until after the ASW on the 28th on the off chance that I absolutely hate it, but I really don't think that will happen ;)

Anyone have an opinion on what I should do about scholarships? Duke offered me 60K but I'd really prefer to go to UVA. I'm not sure if I should wait for UVA's offer and see what happens or just talk to them immediately and tell them if they match, I'll attend. I'm pretty sure UVA isn't going to offer me more than 60K so it seems unlikely I would be costing myself by only asking them to match.

Yeah no question - ask them to match (though I would still choose UVA even if they didn't match).

However, you went to UVA for undergraduate, right? The chance to double your alumni network and experience a different setting may be too good to pass up.

Congratulations,
I just hope that I'll be able to get into a school like University of Virginia myself.
Good Luck!

This thread gets a bump so I can be added to the attending list!

Class of 2011, hoo-rah!

Enjoy ASW for those of you who are going. Grab me some swag and I'll bring you back something authentic from LA like Pinkberry or Jack in the Box :P

TITCR. I'm all over the animal style double-double.

Still doesn't compare to Five Guys, though. And we should celebrate the fact that Charlottesville has not one, but two Five Guys. Hell yeah :D

There are three Five Guys now: downtown mall (near Pavilion), Barracks (w/in walking distance from law school :D ) and Hollymead (by Target). Not that I eat there regularly or anything...

And I'm sorry folks, but the preppy thing is not a subset of UVA, it's a superset. You don't have to have a last-name first-name to fit in, although I think the population of those strikes me as higher here than most places... but you'll be the exception if after three years you haven't broken out (or invested in for the first time) critter shorts for softball games, sundresses/ bow-ties for football games and/or Foxfields.

It's all in good fun, and it's part of the good [mock] Southern charm that will surely rub off on you, even if it's only during Feb Club and while watching [read: not at all watching] horses race. Resistance is futile! No need for me to wax poetic about it now, you'll all soon see for yourselves....

On that point, I sure don't mind being corrected :)

And if the Five Guys burgers don't plump everyone up, pitchers of cheap beer at the Corner bars and heaps of Bodo's bagels just might.

Wow. So at the March 14 ASW I was distraught when my host informed me that my favorite late night ordering place had closed a couple years ago. But then I learned that since I left Cville has acquired a Target, a Best Buy, a TJ Maxx and a Marshalls (some of my favs, lol). And a Chipotle, yum.

Now I learn that there are multiple Five Guys. This is like the icing on the cake! Go Cville!!!

Go C'ville indeed! The arrival of the M.A.C. counter was an unprecedented coup and one which I shamelessly celebrated by charging far too much against my future earning potential...

any fondue and white wine w/ those bowties?

Naw, fondue seems more urban yuppie.

Afternoon savignon blanc in a yachtsman's jacket by the country club tennis courts, on the other hand... that's the stuff right there.

we have chain fondue- we've got a Melting Pot!

EDIT: "Wells", if it were a first-name, would be an excellent example of the aforementioned ubiquitous Virginia last-name first-name. So would "Grey".

i've been rocking the sperry's for a good 3-4 years already, but sadly no bowties...

i can also confirm that wells is indeed his first name. if uva has a weekly cigar and brandy session, i might need to find a way to stay as a 4L, 5L...

- "Wells" is indeed my first name. Well, technically middle, but I've gone by it since I was born. At least I have a very Southern-sounding (Texan) last name, and it constantly gets mistaken for my first.

- Sperry's = amazing. They put Birkenstocks and their smelliness to shame. I've had the same deck sandals for years and will give them up when hell freezes over.

- Melting Pot = best take-your-significant-other-out-to-celebrate restaurant ever. Pricey, but offering 3-4 hours worth of cheese, cooking, and chocolate fondues with dozens of things to dip... it's like heaven on a fork.

- Switch "brandy" to "scotch" and count me in. Let's not forget to rock the captains' hats, monogrammed cufflinks, saffron slacks, and gold-buttoned double-breasted blazers.

sounds like a great time, btw scotch is my #1 poison of choice, but for some reason with a good churchill i prefer a robust brandy to a scotch...
