Re: University of Virginia School of Law 2011
For all those who live on/ near JPA, the drive to the law school can really suck at certain times of the day if you go up Emmet. If there is an event at John Paul Jones, or something at Mem Gym, it gets really backed up.
You lucky people have other options.
A. Take Maury to Alderman to Massie.
B. Go out Fontaine to 29. Take the 250 bypass to the Barracks Rd. exit, go left on Millmont, right on Arlington.
If you get stuck on Emmet, and the traffic isn't moving fast enough, just go left on Lewis Mt. Road or Thompson. They run right into Alderman.
It will take you about a week to have all of Charlottesville mastered. It's tiny.
I think the 4th of July traffic on Preston/ 29 was by far some of the worst I have ever seen in town.

I'm rather intimidated by all of these directions.
Guess it's time to get a GPS...

Hey cantwait! I'll be joining you at Avemore in a few days. The movers are packing up my place today. It'll take me a week or so to get settled but after that, I'll be ready to hang out.cantwaitforuva wrote:Hi guys, I'm alive!
I'm all moved in now. I've been here for about three weeks. Is anybody else in C-ville? I could use some company.
In response to the questions about cable and phone: I have AT&T and it's been fine. I have embarq for internet and have had no problems.
About C-ville for those who haven't spent much time here: It's soo small!! I can drive to everything in 15 minutes. It's hard to get lost unless you're going off into residential areas. People here are really nice. When I was moving in three current residents came out and offered to help. Even the guy who set up my cable was great - he helped me put some furniture together.
About the avemore: Amazing. Everyone here is so nice. The maintenance guys are great. I love the apartment. It's very quiet. No problems with parking. It's ridiculously close to everything. Within a one mile radius: Giant, CVS, Riteaid, at least 5 gas stations, lots of fast food (taco bell, mcdonalds, wendys, burger king, hardees), banks, an emergency medical center (you never know).
Oncelost - how was Prague? did you make it to Kunta Hora?
See everyone soon!

I just got one, haha. Best Buy has the Mio c230 for $129 ($147 after shipping and Florida tax), which is a cool entry-level unit because it actually says street names instead of just saying, "Turn left."triadolpho wrote:I'm rather intimidated by all of these directions.

I bought a GPS when my wife and I were looking for apartments in Charlottesville. Mapquest is kinda tricky in C-ville because the roads change names every few blocks.

If people are still getting things set and haven't been reading along every day, I recommend page 190 of this thread. I used someone else's to-do list and links for getting my student ID from that page. Thanks, other people!greygoose wrote:i forget how we set up student IDs, PM oldblue. i think i followed his instructions on getting that #.

Hey guys,
A few of you probably know I decided to take a year off and try for my dream of UVA after my retake. I'm wondering if any of you know of any business type jobs (entry level) that might be available for my SO if I do get into UVA and we move to C-Ville. He has a business degree but no experience (we just graduated) and I'm worried about him being able to find a job there.
TIA!

Consider Richmond. The commute may suck a bit, but I would think that's probably the best chance for legit jobs.

Anyone else? This really isn't an option, especially with the way gas prices are. It doesn't need to be something huge, just a decent job where he could get some experience over a few years so when I graduate and presumably move to a city he can get a job doing something in business.SgtBilko wrote:Consider Richmond. limegreen, it appears C'ville is pretty solidly a college town, which means very limited job opportunities for SOs (given competition with college students for entry-level jobs). When my wife and I visited we were told that there are a lot of SOs with advanced degrees (like mine, with her MA in Classical Archeology), but most of them could be found working in restaurants and the like. It's always possible to be the exception, though. If he's looking for something business related, you could try asking someone from the law school who he could talk to at Darden about getting a local job.

Re: University of Virginia School of Law 2011
Limegreen... There are a couple hundred Charlottesville-Albemarle comuters that work in Richmond (and a bit more who make the opposite commute, from Richmond to Charlottesville: see BEA commuting patterns), but the overwhelming majority of residents here have jobs here. Tell your significant other to look into jobs at UVa (both academic and medical sides). Just about every department has a demand for accountants, managers, grant specialists, etc. The same is true for the various offices of Martha Jefferson Hospital. There is also SNL financial, NGIC which recently announced they will be adding hundreds of of new positions, Lexisnexis, Wachovia, other banks, and the various small businesses downtown, along 29, and on Pantops. Charlottesville has some of the lowest unemployment numbers in the nation. I am sure you two will find something. There are some, however, that do mention the issue of "under-employment." The employment situation is good here, but as should be expected, the market isn't as diverse as you would find in a major city.

oncelost and doublehoo- Thanks for the very informative posts. I guess I'm looking into this a little early (I withdrew my apps this cycle when I got my increased LSAT score) but I feel much better about things now it sounds doable. I appreciate your help!

No need for divorce. I think this calls for a recommitment ceremony!OnceLost wrote:Nice find, glad! Hmm, maybe I'll divorce my wife so we can remarry, this time with her wearing that!
And no, I would never wear that to my wedding. Wrong colors.

Haha, good point, MarkTwain. You guys could have another ceremony in Virginia!
Cantwait, we did a vow renewal for our fifth anniversary - it was pirate themed.
So, I'm staring down the throat of my last 40 hours of work right now with a mere 7 days left before I pick up the moving truck and get started. I'm ecstatic about the move, but one thing holds my ecstasy in check. No, I'm not talking about an article of clothing. I'm talking about my house. This market sucks for selling a house, so I'll be cashing out chunks of my limited retirement account (hello, early withdrawal penalty!) to pay my mortgage in Tallahassee at the same time those happy student loans are covering my rent in Charlottesville. My house is listed as a rental, a rent to own, and for purchase (for less than we paid for it more than 2 years ago, I might add), but there's no action. For this reason, I am now going to use my first ever frowny emoticon.
