i've heard english, and i've heard german (from derrenberger). i've also heard ice cream flavor, but the history is pretty flimsy with that one.
German derivative would make sense... my grandmother's maiden name was significantly altered when they moved here -- much more anglicized.

Welcome, DirtyBird! Uh oh, I am temporarily handicapped... I might be in for some trouble

Are you going to Preakness Jeff? I'm trying to rally some friends to go since I've never been to any horse race. Anyone else planning on going as well?

Many names were anglicised regardless of origin.

1. Preakness isn't a horse race, it's a shitshow. Each person is allowed to bring in a cooler. So, that's like 24 beers per person which last year meant full beers being thrown around like grenades. It was actually kind of shitty dodging them. That said, it is a blast if it doesn't rain and last year I lost my phone (which I never do, but should give you an indication of the level of debauchery). I will say though, considering the price of a ticket +parking/bus, I don't know that it's really worth it. It is a good place to meet a bunch of drunks you will never see again though.

2. Save yourself for Fall Foxfields.

That's why the port-o-let has been shot to hell. And the stop sign at the range exit. And the cement block wall separating the pistol ranges and the rifle ranges.

so we're talking a difference of $6,000 between Chicago and UVA? That's a no brainer, UVA. It's warmer, you're less likely to get shot, etc.

It's always nice to be offered money, even if you don't take it.

Chicago is a great school, but UVa's climate and laid-back environment had me sold from the moment we walked in and were greeted by the remarkably friendly receptionist (I won't use her name her 'cause, well, it is still the internet). It's a tough decision, but you risk missing out on laser-tag (not to mention softball) if you don't end up in Charlottesville. You gotta have your priorities, ya know?

Seriously, it is a difficult decision and I wish you the best. For what it's worth, I gave up $60k at Georgetown and would have happily given up the same amount at almost any other law school to attend UVa, but that's just me.

given the current lack of pig fat in the river, I doubt this will be a huge problem again. :D

There is a pretty stark difference between these two schools, maybe more so than between any two top law schools. What do you want to do with yourself, both during law school and after?

Go to UVa and be a UVa grad, respectively. Oh, wait, you weren't talking to me, were you?

pogo, i was planning on heading there, but i got some other events keeping me here.

ubuntu: if you want to go into academia/ big law in chicago, i would definitely lean uchicago. however, if you are indifferent about working the midwest/chicago markets, uva probably has it beat. you also need to factor in the schools location/the people/the culture. under those considerations uva>uchicago. i wish you the best on your final decision.

oncelost: i gave up 60K from GULC too, and would do it again. hands down there.

greygoose: i have an interest in academia and judicial clerkships, which chicago is very strong in. however, my passion is international human rights, and chicago lacks a strong international law/human rights clinic.

uva's climate, people, proximity to the bf (to be a 2L at GULC), everything wins hands down. but that's a lot of money to another amazing school. i am having a bit of a nervous breakdown at my desk right now. it's very awkward.
