Its not me, although my lack of name creativity probably already indicates that. Seeing as facebook has become much more popular, who is both here on TLS and there, and what are the TLS names of those in the facebook group?

No worries. I haven't exactly been flaunting it.

And if people here are worried about my feistiness and IRL personality, so far–from the Michigan Law students I've met–the universal comment is that I am weird, but harmless.

Cheers:)

Haha, I'm not worried about anyone's personality. I'm looking forward to meeting all the new 1Ls this fall. I should have signed up to be an orientation leader, but they sent out the email when I was totally stressed out with studying/writing and wasn't to make any sort of commitment to do ANYTHING EVER. But I will probably do it next year.

Darn. I'm getting a lot of PMs about this, so here are my reasons:

1) Money.
2) Legal Philosophy.
3) GSI

The first point doesn't require much explanation. Many of you know that I want to go into academia; though practicing in the real world is quite enticing, I really want to get my Ph.D and start teaching. I need to have as little debt as I can going into law school, so I'm not trapped when I leave it.

The second point pertains to the relative strength of jurisprudence programs. Michigan has a very, very, very strong intellectual and curricular focus in legal history and philosophy, and this is something that's very important to me. It's worth nothing that I am entering law school solely because of my interest in the very theoretical aspects of law (though I hope I will acquire more than a passing interest in other, more practical, areas). Stanford only has one professor in jurisprudence (Josh Cohen); yes, he is a key player in the field, but Michigan simply has more professors in the field, and they are all heavy-weights when it comes to scholarship. Some of you know that I am still on the NYU waitlist; this is for the same reason: their jurisprudence resources are unmatched (well, at least until Shapiro physically shifts to YLS), and I'd consider going there for no money if it means working with someone who is pretty much the father of contemporary jurisprudence (Ronald Dworkin).

The third point sealed the deal. When I eventually apply to Ph.D programs in philosophy, my order of preference for programs will be as follows:

1) Princeton
2) MIT
3) Harvard
4) Michigan
5) Pitt
6) NYU
7) Rutgers
8) Yale

The GSI program gives me the opportunity to work with the philosophy department and gain valuable connections. Along with these connections and recommendations, and the teaching experience, I will have an invaluable asset when I eventually apply.

It's worth noting that Michigan's transgender resources are unparalleled. The med center and community are fully staffed for my needs, and the faculty and staff are well informed of the issues that pertain to my situation (due in large part to a former student who was the first openly transgender student to attend. Thank goodness to her).

So that's that. See you all in the fall (provided other schools don't come a knockin':))

yay emmy!

Mosel, nothing new except finding out that Emmy will be joining us. And football tickets coming up. And people looking for housing.

Oh yeah, and final seat deposits due June 15, for those that haven't done it.

hey jgolds:

I don't think many people on TLS want to publicly reveal their real-life identities. But I can let you know who I am if you keep it a secret :)

Sure. If you feel I am to be trusted, find me and friend me on facebook. I am the person with a name surprisingly close to my TLS name.

I also most compliment you on the picture of the gigantic rabbit.

"Weird but harmless" should make you fit right into academic circles, especially if you are fiesty about your opinions IRL.

Fellow fall starters,

was there a form to go along with that second seat deposit? Or do I just send another check? I can't seem to find a form (if one exists).

Thanks!

There was a form that looked exactly like the form for the first deposit. I received a letter after the first deposit telling me they had gotten the money, and it included the second form.

Friendly bumping. To let the other classes know Michigan 2011 is still alive. :)

So this post has some actual content - do we have any new people? Any waitlisters in?

To summer starters and early movers: I'm in AA now (Ypsi), moved in and looking to hang out if anyone's free. Just PM me! I have a summer off! I can rub it in if you want! ;)

I'm interested in hearing from the summer starters as well, are they just too busy to tell us how things are going? Makes me fret a bit...

I'm a summer starter. We have a memo due Monday for Legal Practice, so surely some are working hard on that. But generally it just feels weird to post when you see people here every day, etc... too cool for TLS now. 8) Anyway, I can't speak for everyone, but I absolutely love it here! And don't worry, although it's not easy, there's still been plenty of time to engage in productive side-activities, like naps. :D

Anyone know what time orientation starts on the 25th? Can we arrive that day or will we need to arrive the day before?
