Manville is a safe bet, but if you can, I'd advise you to continue the search well into the semester (if you can avoid a one year lease that is).

Because the apts are so small, you will want to study outside sometimes, maybe in a library, maybe in the law library so the location is not so good, unless you want to go to the Berkeley Public Library which has limited hours.

There are also limited advantages to living on shattuck besides BART access and different food.

Manville is damn quiet though.

I'm sitting in my future kitchen, with roughly 1/3 of my boxes unpacked.
TR:
I-80 speed limit is 75mph from Nebraska through Nevada.

Utah is a bit surreal. Entered from Wyoming, and the terrain was rugged and rocky. It then changed to bright green and mountainous. I can see why the early Mormons might have thought they were in the promised land; it is truly striking. Passed the Great Salt Lake and drove into the desert. My brother-in-law, who was feeling ill, then threw up in the truck.

Nevada is a desert, with intermittent casinos.

California has an agricultural checkpoint at the border. The guard demanded to see the contents of my Penske, which was packed full. I couldn't get the door open at first. She asked what else I had in there. In near disbelief, I said, "Things from my house; I'm moving." "Okay" she said. My brother-in-law and I looked at each other once we had driven off and he said, "Well she accomplished nothing."

A bit late on posting here but I would recommend avoiding Manville. Walls are paper thin so you hear everything. Also, a bit of a microscope and high schoolish as everyone knows your business (but on the plus side you get to meet everyone). In my wilder days, I must admit that I was kicked out of Manville due to partying too hard (up until 4 am the first 2 weeks - I was transitioning from a summer of total partying to law school and burning the candle on both ends). From there lived with 6 law school students in a huge home in the Oakland Hills and I loved it.

Everyone should have a great year, looking forward to the updates. Please post as a Berkeley 1L taking questions when you can. Thanks!

It's been pretty quiet in Manville so far, but most of the residents on my floor seem to be mature grad students and relatively shy law students. I did hear a woman singing loudly in Chinese at around 3 AM last night, but I believe her voice was coming from the road and not from inside the building. I've been surprised by how early in the evening everything has been dying down in Berkeley. Most nights, it seems there is almost no one outside after 11 PM. This will probably change completely in a week or so when the undergrads are all here, but maybe they won't terrorize this part of the city.

Aside from the Kens, Manville will never be loud due to undergrads. Southwest Berkeley and Northside are generally the most quiet.

To dispel some myths, I've found no shortage of fun and attractive people, and there's even some overlap.

Dear doomswitched,

Prepare to be annihilated* at oral arguments on April 11.

Cordially,

SoC

*"Be annihilated" here means "find that judges can be surprisingly sympathetic toward stammering, incompetent counsel for whom they feel sorry."

Trying to lull me into a false sense of security, eh?

EDIT: Hmm, just noticed you posted that almost 20 days ago. I am so on the TLS ball.

Yes. You will be summarily banned unless you resume posting in The Lounge and starting iSketch games.
