Goodness, that sucks. Isn't that what financial aid is supposed to prevent?

hm, her parents made a high salary and she didn't get schollys. GWU is wayy expensive for undergrad, she should have transfered out.

hmmm it's sad, but her parents might have an arranged marriage for her (she's south asian). She's seriously considering it.

I will have about 13k. Most of it was to cover extra expenses, ie: study abroad, COL in nyc for unpaid internships, etc...

My good friend graduated from American with 170k. Her parents told her to take out everything and promised to pay it back-but the economic downturn hurt their investments. Her payments are over 1k a month, she makes 50k, and lives in DC (very high COL). Sucks...

Wow, if her parents really did make high enough salaries to count their daughter out of need-based aid, they did her a major disservice by not saving for her college education. Not to pick on your friend and her family, but wow. That's just awful.

True, its just that she wants to go to grad school but with that amount of debt hanging over her head, it doesn't look very bright. I think she majored in Public Relations.

That is ridiculous. These kids going to American and GWU are not getting an education that is $170-$200k more valuable than what I got at UMD, and (parents) paid a total of <$20,000 for, instate. And now here we are after college, both making $50k and I have none of that ridiculous debt. Asinine.

Seriously. Considering the number of perfectly good public schools in the va/DC/md area.

Zero...scholarship totals were actually more than tuition so I got a nice rebate check every semester. Was fortunate enough for my parents to pay for rent and things like that. Since they had to pay relatively so little (at least compared to what they expected) they are helping me out a decent bit with my COL expense during law school. I feel fortunate to be in the situation I am in.

The only complaint is that I went to my state TTT school. All in all I think the quality of education I got was exactly what I paid for (nothing). But since I am going to law school, and knew I was going into law school when I started undergrad, it was in the long run the best decision.

My god, I actually summed up the courage to check my debt numbers.

$44,000 for an in-state public school that I attended with a 1550 (old numbers) SAT.

My parent's EFC was so low that I was even getting Pell Grants. Plenty of other grants as well.

Then my father passed away and my mom made bank on the life insurance, of which I never saw a penny. Yet the EFC that year went through the roof but the school was reasonable and only bumped up my loans moderately.

Then my mom went full-retard on me and decided she didn't need to send in her FAFSA info the next year. We don't talk much and I assumed she didn't need her hand held after 2 years of FAFSA. Since she usually sends her FAFSA in late after sending the schools a notice about it being late (she's a business owner and it takes her a while to get her financial info together) so it was typical for me to wait until summer to hear about aid.

Except that summer she never informed me that she decided not to do FAFSA at all. She had had a "conversation" with someone "knowledgeable about money" and it wasn't worth the effort to fill it out.

I went from maybe $10k cumulative loans from Freshman and Sophomore year, to $25,000+ in loans in Junior year alone. By the time she got her FAFSA in, it didn't make a difference. I had tripled my cumulative UG debt in one year. Senior year hasn't been kind to me either.

This is when I wish there was some level of "lock-in" aid besides scholarships. I had a 4-year grant dismantled by the state government one year in and replaced with a yearly grant that was shortly pulled the year after. Every other form of non-loan aid disappeared as well, leaving me holding the bag.

$44k for a cheap in-state tuition public school is just absurd.

100K+ and I kick myself for it every day now that I've decided to go to law school...it's really effecting my decision on where to apply/attend. Went in freshman year with good financial aid which somehow disappeared after that first year. Too late to change it now and I loved my undergrad experience, but I'll be kicking myself for it for many many years to come.

None, I went to a JC for the first 2 years. After transferring, I got in-state tuition and my parents paid. Unfortunately my sister is now in her junior year, so my parents don't have the money to help with law school. I'm extremely thankful that I don't have UG debt, because I definitely wouldn't be going to law school.

My parents retired so I had 0 familial contribution. I paid for the rest with a work study and some babysitting. It worked out really well.
