Can I Subpeona My Mother’s Tax Returns?

Post by greatspirit » Tue Jan 16, 2018 9:40 pm

Hey y’all,

So I forsee my mother (only living parent) being an issue in securing financial aid. She may play some silly game and without her tax return info (she’s dirt poor so I’d get aid) to be spiteful.

Could I subpeona them from her? Or take some other legal recourse.

You are considered an independent person by virtue of being a graduate student and therefor not required to provided her information. Her being poor will not help you and actually any income she earns that you report could hurt you. Apply with only your data.

1) Some schools require you to report parents anyways for need-based aid.
2) OP was banned so don't bother.

That's only true for the FAFSA, but law schools can and do ask for parents' info on the CSS Profile (up to a certain age like 28, 30, or 32).

Ah, sorry for the misinformation. I should have qualified that my statement was for the FAFSA requirements.
