Grad plus endorser age?

Post by MovingUnits » Wed Oct 04, 2017 12:29 am

Hola everyone ~

My question is: is 18 old enough to endorse?

ETA: to make more specific

Do not do this to your brother.

I have no idea if he's old enough, but it is morally bankrupt to make your younger brother sign on to your debt. At least try using an older relative who has some concept of what they would be getting into.

Don't fuck your brother over by straddling him with thousands in debt. Don't go to law school if you don't have anyone who can endorse

Having your brother endorse will destroy what is very likely your only close relationship (or you'd have other options). Law school isn't even almost worth this. I cannot tell you emphatically enough what a mistake it would be to allow him to endorse your loan, regardless of the legality.

Does anyone have an actual answer to my question?

I'm not asking any advice. I'm asking about the specific requirement of Grad Plus endorsers.

The actual answer is that you're a terrible brother if you sign up your younger, barely-even-18-year-old brother to guarantee you'll repay your loans.

Only if you have bad credit. Basically a co-signer.

No idea! Can’t even remember if he knows for certain that he needs an endorser or not.

Yeah you probably need to have some kind of adverse event on your credit report for the gubmint to require an endorser.

It seems like you made your post less specific, not more specific.

As I recall, OP has bad credit due to "an accident."

And to be fair: I don’t mean to give the OP a hard time for having bad credit. Shit happens and a lot of people don’t have any safety nets. (A hard time for wanting to have his 18 yo brother essentially co-sign for student loans is different, though.)

What's your adverse credit history? Do you know? When was it? My VERY STRONG suggestion is that you either wait until the adverse credit history wears out, or you get enough of a scholarship that you don't have to rely on PLUS loans.

For the record, there are a lot of reasons why someone might have an adverse credit history that do not equal them being a totally irresponsible shit of a person. But there are also a lot of reasons why you might have an adverse credit history that are going to cause you trouble with the bar. That's a huge huge issue. I needed an endorser and I actually looked very carefully at the bar applications for my preferred jdx to make sure that I wouldn't need to report the incident that kept me from getting my own PLUS loans.

But yeah. Don't do this to your brother, man. Wait a few years.
