How do I defer undergraduate loans?

Post by theycallmefoes » Thu Jul 31, 2014 6:28 pm

It is my understanding that students have the option to defer undergraduate loans while in grad/law school. How do I go about doing this?

If these are federal loans you are talking about, it should be automatically done when you matriculate into law school.

I thought the automatic deferment was only true for federal loans? If you have any at all from a private lender, you probably want to call them to see if you can put them in deferment. If you have them from a lender with both federal and private loans (e.g. Sallie Mae has some private ones), I imagine it wouldn't be too hard to arrange.

Don't go to law school until you've paid off your undergrad loans.

Thanks to all of you for your responses. My undergrad loans are all federal, so it's good to know that I don't have to do anything extra for deferral.

Just in case anyone was still wondering, I called Sallie Mae and they said it was automatic for them too.

Just an FYI -- deferral of federal loans is only automatic if your grad school reports to the National Clearinghouse. Most schools do so, these days, but this is your credit we're talking about, so I think it pays to play it safe. Each of your loans should have a servicer website you can log into to view your account status. Personally, I'd log in sometime in September and check everything out - if it says deferred, you're good. If not, you need to do deferment paperwork, which is super easy anyway.
