Work Study

Postby Annie09 » Sat May 07, 2011 12:02 pm

Hi everyone!

What are your thoughts on work study? I will be a 1L at Georgetown and I was offered over $4K in work study. What kind of jobs are these usually? How much do they pay per hour? Is it impossible to do them during 1L? I'm inclined to reject it and try to more GradPLUS money, but maybe I can handle it ... thoughts?

Work study is often on campus in the library or in one of the offices. I had a good work study job in UG that paid $15 an hour my freshman year. If I recall correctly, the program pays half your wage, and the employer pays the other half, so employers have incentive to hire you.

I'm a fellow 0L, so I don't have first-hand experience with working during 1L, but I'm going to forgo it for at least the first semester. I worked two or three jobs throughout UG to graduate with no debt, but it killed my GPA. Everyone I've talked to who's done well in school has NOT worked the first year, so I'm going to follow their lead.
