Rothman / Associates Position at Skadden?
Hi guys,
I was just notified that I was offered USC's Rothman scholarship, which among other things, extends a guranteed 1L summer associates job at Skadden.
Does anyone know how much a summer associate typically makes at Skadden Arps Slate Meagher (Los Angeles, CA)? Any ballpark figure would help my decision process.
I never really considered biglaw until now . . .

Skadden SAs typically make market (roughly $3100 a week).

Wow, congratulations! That's a huge accomplishment.
I believe a biglaw SA can expect to make approximately 30k over the summer. I'll yield to other users who may have had SAs, though.

wow, i took a look at your profile. You must have done some tremendous things to be able to come off so strong in your application. Congratulations!neonx wrote:Hi guys,

Re: Rothman / Associates Position at Skadden?
Given that you're in at Stanford, that was probably a good decision. But that did sound like a pretty sweet deal USC offered.
I just gotta say I'm confused (to the point of being perhaps slightly irritated): it seems to me that there's something significant you're not revealing in your profile. You cite your numbers as 168/ 3.85 (and indicate non-URM), and yet the following is your LSN acceptances profile:
3 - Stanford - $116,613 [need-aid, projected]
4 - Columbia - $37,500
5 - NYU - $140,520 [Root-Tilden-Kern recipient!] -- withdrew
7 - Penn - $61,410
7 - Michigan - $30,000
9 - Virginia - $75,000
11 - Duke - $75,000
12 - Northwestern - pending aid
13 - Cornell - $36,000
14 - Georgetown - $90,000
14 - UT - $69,240
16 - UCLA - $90,550
18 - USC - $149,520 [Rothman recipient!] -- withdrew
18 - WUSTL - $120,000
20 - Minnesota - $120,390
23 - Illinois - $120,000
23 - BU - $90,000
27 - Iowa - $123,966
30 - Emory - $96,000 [Woodruff finalist]
Massive schollys, including in T6. Unless you are a nationally- or internationally-known professional, I see no way you have this profile without being URM or having higher numbers than you cite. You indicate your numbers are 'not that strong,' and attribute your mystifying success to being a very enthusiastic applicant (in what you wrote for your TLS profile).
Not trying to be difficult dude, but what's up?
Happy to have my suspicion proven wrong. I think if for some reason you did happen to get these offers based on the stats you have provided (168/3.85/non-URM/no mention of phenomenal work experience or gold-medal type soft), your experience should still be regarded with caution by other non-URMs with your stats in terms of establishing any sort of likely outcome. I mean seriously, congrats, but WOW.

Yeah your posts always sort of make me wonder what your P.S. and App were like. Congrats on Stanford!

I just withdrew from the Rothman a few hours ago.powerlawyer06 wrote:Yeah your posts always sort of make me wonder what your P.S. and App were like. Congrats on Stanford!
P.S. Now that you have decided please stop making posts like this. They just make everyone else feel bad. Especially since you already decided on S, there is just no point in rubbing it in.

A guaranteed SA position with Skadden? I didnt even know law schools could offer this. Why does Skadden agree to this?

It's specifically tied to the LA branch, so maybe USC has a special connection with Skadden. The scholarship has been given since 2002, I think.BeachandRun23 wrote:A guaranteed SA position with Skadden? I didnt even know law schools could offer this. Why does Skadden agree to this?

Yeah. I was gonna say...I had dinner with a bunch of Skadden associates last week and they made it very clear that they weren't hiring 1Ls as SAs. But maybe it was just on the east coast....neonx wrote:It's specifically tied to the LA branch, so maybe USC has a special connection with Skadden. You may have answered this in another thread but I am just wondering, did you hear that Rothman scholars are almost always offered a 2L SA and job at Skadden, or is the 1L SA the only thing that is even fairly certainneonx wrote:It's specifically tied to the LA branch, so maybe USC has a special connection with Skadden. I looked awhile back at previous winners and it seemed that the Rothman scholars typically split their 2L SA with another firm and skadden.AssumptionRequired wrote:You may have answered this in another thread but I am just wondering, did you hear that Rothman scholars are almost always offered a 2L SA and job at Skadden, or is the 1L SA the only thing that is even fairly certainneonx wrote:It's specifically tied to the LA branch, so maybe USC has a special connection with Skadden. Re: Rothman / Associates Position at Skadden?
I looked at what the USC page had posted, but I feel the info of what people were doing post law school was only sufficient for 2 people, as this is relatively new. Maybe OP had some other information on the previous winners or was even in touch with a few of them.trudat15 wrote:I looked awhile back at previous winners and it seemed that the Rothman scholars typically split their 2L SA with another firm and skadden.AssumptionRequired wrote:You may have answered this in another thread but I am just wondering, did you hear that Rothman scholars are almost always offered a 2L SA and job at Skadden, or is the 1L SA the only thing that is even fairly certainneonx wrote:It's specifically tied to the LA branch, so maybe USC has a special connection with Skadden.
