Top Law Schools

I've completed and submitted my FAFSA prior to the general deadline and submitted my NA on 3/1 (the deadline for most schools). However, I haven't had the chances to do my taxes yet (or my parents, since I've been doing it for them) therefore when I go to update both the FAFSA and NA, it will obviously be after the deadline. Will this "late" submission affect my chances of aid? What if my tax estimations were somewhat accurate? Could not having my actual tax info for 2010 affect what amount of aid (if any) a school would give to me? I've received acceptances, but no $ values yet. Is it because I haven't provided tax info? Halp?!

And yes, I know, my bad for not doing my taxes early. Just got a new job and I've been on that for the past little while.

In my UG experience, if you do not turn in the taxes, they won't give you the $$. However, I didn't need my taxes before getting an offer. With LS, the only one that I've had require the taxes before an offer was Cornell... which sucks because I have no power over my mother to do her taxes... So I would go to your school lists and see what they require for financial aid consideration. If it just says FAFSA and/or NA, then you should be fine. You will have to get them in eventually, though.

What are you opinions on the FAFSA/NA requesting tax info (how much paid, etc)? It does give you an option to complete/update it later, but I just wanted to make sure that it didn't make any significant difference in the offer. That's what I was originally referring to rather than submitting the actual tax forms to the schools.

I seriously doubt if not completing your taxes is an issue. I applied to thirty-six schools last year. Of those thirty-six, two asked for tax information and all the rest took my FAFSA as true and accurate as submitted with my estimated tax information. The last of my aid awards for last year didn't come in until late April. Admittedly I applied late in the cycle.

Consider contacting the financial aid offices of several of the law schools you have applied to. Ask them if it matters that you haven't had a chance to complete your taxes. Asking won't hurt. Then, if it is an issue, you can deal with it and if it isn't you can relax.

new issue: my school of choice is claiming that they never received my fafsa even though i have a submit/processed date along with an sar. i dont want to update my fafsa with the new tax info since i'm sure if i do, they'll get the later submission time, whereas i want my school to at least acknowledge that they have the original submit date two months ago.
