School Me On Stipends

Postby MrMoon » Fri Mar 04, 2011 12:26 pm

Are stipends real? I mean how real?

Which school offers them, how often and WHY?

1. Yes
2. Very rare I'd say
3. You'd have to be a SUPER BALLER (stat wise) for them to grant you one.

I think UVa has one scholarship that comes with a stipend.

So its one or two per school?

As a rule would a T30-50 offer a stipend to a student with HYS numbers, or only in the rare case?

I think GWU has a stipend program for their EA applicants, I could be mistaken though.

Oh also, don't the full Darrows at Michigan have a stipend for the first year? I could be dreaming this up though...

I have heard through the grapevine that Univ of Chicago has given a substantial stipend ( think 2 years living expenses) to some of the Rubenstein recipiants. If this is the case it means a virtually free ride for all three years. Can someone confirm this? Thanks

For 1L summer if you do public interest work, yes. Although I think this thread is about a different kind of stipend, like the scholarship kind?

Chicago Kent does something called honors scholars; comes with a 10k per year stipend. It is a pretty good program.

Yes. Very real.

MrMoon wrote:Which school offers them?

To find out if a school offers stipends, look at ABA data. If under the scholarship/grant section it has a decent percentage of "more than full tuition," well, that's often a stipend. Then go to school website and read about scholarships.

In the meantime, here is an outdated list of some schools from student reported first-hand accounts: http://www.lawschooldiscussion.org/inde ... msg5317596

MrMoon wrote:How often?

Usually every year.

MrMoon wrote:WHY?

Recruiting high LSAT/GPA, chance of employment success, likelihood to donate to school, etc.
