Does a "Why X" essay hurt merit aid chances? Forum

Does a "Why X" essay hurt merit aid chances?

I understand that ED equates into a smaller chance for merit money since the school doesn't need to coax you to attend. Does this also extend into Why X? essays, since they too demonstrate a significant interest in the school?
