How Hard is it to Get GradPlus Loans Again?

Post by HOPEFORCHANGE » Wed Feb 09, 2011 2:16 pm

Okay, don't say anything about a cosigner, because it is not an option for me. I was silly when I was younger and ran up a bunch of credit cards, many that went into collections. I paid off or settled all of them this summer and I just have two cards on my reports that say sold to another lender/charge-off (rather than paid or settled) so would need clarification about whether they were paid (which they were). I have never been delinquent on anything else. I have never missed a student loan payment, have no liens, no foreclosures, no bankruptcies. Has anyone had similar circumstances recently and been approved for GradPlus? I just want peace of mind is all. Again, I can't get a cosigner

Get a cosigner.

Lol I'm just kidding. I have absolutely no experience with loans, but have been reading about them a ton recently. I think if you have settled all your delinquent accounts you should be fine, but I could be wrong. I imagine these credit cards were not big time $10k + limits so IMO the fact that you were young and dumb and ran up $2k in debt should have no effect on you asking for $50k + loans for law school. Especially if you have shown stability and regularity on your other student loan payments. Again I'm in no way a Financial Aid expert, would probably classify myself as a financial aid noob actually. lol

BTW, since I think a lot of people have these questions - I will let you guys know if I get GradPlus or not (if I get into law school...don't want to count my chickens)

as long as your collections have been paid you will be fine.

i'm not sure about the status of the two unsettled cards, though, you might want to talk to your bank about that and figure out exactly what the deal is. what specifically does your credit report list for your accounts?

They just appear as though I may have not paid...they say "Sold/transferred to another lender" and then the corresponding collection accounts I paid off don't say what they were for...thanks for the info. Also, I know that I cannot change this so it makes them match up.

You MIGHT be able to get the entries to disappear with a dispute that exercises your rights under the law.

interesting, i would try to talk to someone at the department of education and see what category those items fall under. if the transferred debts are considered "discharges" then they may disqualify you, but i couldn't tell you for certain.

I think they mean "discharged through bankruptcy." The Dept. of Ed. told me a few months ago that I'd probably be rejected at first and get it upon appeal, but I will believe it when I see it. Just wondering if anyone with a similar credit history got them without a cosigner. Thanks

The govt owns the stuff now(just don't call it socialism or jimmy carter will call you a racist)

The repayment is allowed to be "income based" and what ever is left after 20 years forgiven automaticly if you sign up for it the right way now. (no bankruptcy required) Crazy but true.

so, you would rather cry about your debt vs knowing how it actually works then?

Dude, it's on the paperwork you have to agree to when you get the stupid loan to begin with.

Fine remove the socialism/carter joke that I tried to use to lighten the mood(the old bastard is senile as shit though and the whole universe knows it)

THIS IS ABOUT FINAID!!!

If you don't understand the repayment option, then you need to re-read it is all. People cry about "I won't be able to pay it back" When its allowed to be income based and the rest forgiven automaticly after 20 years.

Good or bad, that's what the govt did when they took control of it all last year. If you are on FinAid you should know this.

You probably won't need a cosigner, but why wouldn't it be an option?

Because my mother is deceased and lived in England anyway and my father wouldn't do it. No one would be willing. It really is a lot to agree to anyway since it basically pays for what Stafford doesn't cover tuition-wise and then cost of living. So, anyway, yeah, it isn't an option. I basically am approved without or have to try to go to law school later. Thanks.

Best of luck to you then.

I guess try to get a scholarship. Heck anyone who can get into lawschool in general can get a freeride at cooley(160 lsat is all, or less if you have a good gpa)

It'd say start there for 1L and then transfer if you get better loan options latter.

Nah, I am not moving. And plus there are four tier schools in other places offering me scholarship money. I would just go to law school later if it came down to it.

Yes, this fall. I hope it all works out - but I guess all I can do is wait for an acceptance and beg them to try and see if I will be approved as a preliminary thing before I give a seat deposit. And again, for anyone else, as soon as I know if I can get them or not, I will post it here.

You should get a cosigner.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
