Quick FAFSA question regarding urgency

I don't have my W2's yet for 2009 and haven't done my taxes.

Is there any reason the FAFSA needs to be completed before February / March? Do I risk losing out on anything?

Relax. No one has any of that stuff yet. Most people wont get it until jan 31st. You're fine.

That's what I figured, I just didn't know if there was any compelling reason to have it all ready to go and submitted within a couple days of receiving that stuff.

Thanks.

Actually, you do want to have the FAFSA completed and submitted by Feb. 15th just to be on the safe side. I would not recommend sitting on it until March.

False. My FAFSA and need-based are completed/sent.

It's nice having a CPA in the family.

Did you really need a CPA to do that for you?

Must be nice receiving your W2's before everyone else in the country.

It won't be. I won't even get my W2's until the end of January, and my CPA will take about a month or so.

Most schools don't have their own app that you have to complete and send in, right? (Cornell does, but so far it's the only one I've come across.) Basically, the financial aid app IS the FAFSA?

A lot of schools require Need Access in addition to FAFSA.

I'm pretty sure you can use your 2008 tax information if it will be close to 2009's. FAFSA asks for estimates, plus you can send in corrections once you've done your 2009 taxes.

But is there any compelling reason to?

Do you stand to miss out on anything? Is it like rolling admissions?

I think it could hurt with school's distribution of aid if you submit too late.

Too late like June?

I was planning on March / April.

I've heard that schools that give grants can run out of them by April. I just wanted to get my stuff in early to be on the safe side.

some schools I have applied to have "soft deadlines" and explicitly state "you will be disadvantaegd by submitting this late.

this^ you shoudl have a record of completing it but can always go back and update...at least that is what my advisor and two financial aid offices told me.

I made a lot more money in 2008 than I did in 2009.

Should I still use 2008 taxes and then go back and change it?

I'm curious about this, too, if anyone has info...
