Wealthy parents FTMFW.......

Unfortunately I don't have wealthy parents so I'm guessing I'll have around 90k of debt.

why oh why do i want to go to a UC so badly now? they're just going to keep raising the tuition on me. maybe i should just apply to lewis and clark and see if they give me a full ride.

With your numbers, I bet you can do better than $$ at a top 40. I think that LRAP will be better at higher ranked schools too.

according to LSN i don't really have a chance at getting money anywhere i'd want to go in the 20-30 range. so i'll probably just suck it up and hope GW agrees that i'm needy

Between $0 and $100K depending on where I decide to go and how generous they are with financial aid...huh, the decision sounds a lot easier when you put it that way.

Close to 200k if I sneak into a reach (my vote, I'm still trying to be optimistic), closer to 100-150k if I wind up with current options.

Probably around $70k, unless I somehow get into Harvard or Stanford... any other school would have to match or come close to the $$ UVA offered.

If i sneak into Cornell or NYU, maybe 200k, if not then just Cost of living expenses, roughly 60-70k, depending on how much my GF wants to support me over the 3 years. I also might luck into some money from my eccentric grandfather and i have some savings from my job i was planning on blowing on a month long junket through europe, so in theory it's possible i could walk away with closer to 30k, but i'm not holding my breath.

Aming for nothing but Federal Loans.

I am actually starting to panic about the amount of loans I will have to take out. I will have about $12K in loans from undergrad. I am pretty sure I am attending Boalt. Their tuition keeps going up. It will be about 44k y1, 50K y2 and 52k year 3. I will also need to take out more money than average for living expenses b/c I have 2 kids. I have 0 savings, my parents cannot and will not help at all. And my boyfriend does not even make enough to cover our rent. I am hoping to stay below $200k. I am going to work on applying for outside scholarships, but I really hope I get some need based aid from Boalt.

Well.. I voted 150K, that's including undergrad. 100K is for undergrad (thanks a lot, NYU), and I will probably wind up staying in FL for the cheap tuition here. Assuming I get absolutely no financial aid for LS, it's looking to be around 40K (my parents keep telling me they'll get me an apt for LS so hopefully I won't have to fork over any money for housing + food, etc.)

I voted for 200k. I have a shitty GPA and dreams of attending a T14 school, so I don't plan on receiving a scholarship (being admitted would be a miracle). If I'm lucky enough to get in somewhere, I'd gladly pay sticker.

Prior applicants on LSN with similar numbers have received scholarships to some of my non-reaches, so the number could be in the 100-120k range.

+1 thats me exactly. Except I'll likely end up at a school paying sticker for abot 60k total (Geogia or UNC). Wife pays COL and my undergrad debt (7k, should be payable over three years).

I come out with 60k. That shouldn't be too bad for a school in the 30s, no?

Going to take a full ride to a T20-T30, so 30k for law school (hopefully all subsidized stafford). 0k from undergrad.

I have a little under 10k from undergrad and am very hesitant about ending up with 6 digit debt. Come on, need aid and SA gig...

Upon reading this thread, I am reminded of a quote by Frederick Nietzche...
“Insanity in individuals is something rare - but in groups, parties, nations, epochs, and TLS members, it is the rule.”

Just out of curiosity, were you paying full price at your LS? And which one was it again? I know you've mentioned this before, but I can't seem to remember.

Out of curiosity, would you consider $140k after COL at a T10 a decent investment or should I just kill myself now?

I voted for 175 k. I'll certainly have to pay tuition if I manage to break into the T6, (crosses fingers) and if I make it in, I'm going. I would have voted more but my husband works. I didn't vote less because we're going to be a commuter couple with 2 apartments during the time I'm in law school.

Hard to say, don't know you well enough to say 1 way or the other. You're at a T10 though, props to you for getting in, that by itself is quite an accomplishment. It's really the T20 and under group who are paying sticker that I get most PO'ed about.

As little as possible because I'd like to avoid biglaw like the plague. Crossing my fingers that either I get some $ at Cornell, or GULC comes through with some $ and I get accepted to their PILS program.

I think it is high time that we apply the profit maximization strategy to the decision making process of determining how much money to spend financing a legal education. We must minimize costs, and maximize profits!!!!

I know that it is sort of expected that you go into debt for law school but honestly what is the point? Let's say 142k take the lsat each year, and combined the top 30 schools admitt 3000 students (probably way too many) but for argument sake, that means that only 2% are going to get into school were they can expect recoup the costs of 40-60K per year law school. Even once you get in, you then have to place in the top 10% to even be considered for the high paying jobs. I know everyone expects that they will do well but the reality is that there is only room for one at the top! You can't make decisions based on the best possible circumstances, you have to consider the worst case scenario. What if you spend 150k for law school and can only find a job making 60k? What if you get hired at the big firm and realize you are fucking miserable spending 15 hours at work and only billing 8 hours becuase the firm cuts your hours. Too bad, your stuck!

I said 150K over three years + UG debt. I'm heading to UCLA next year as an instate, but with increasing tuition, it won't be pretty. I'm doing well for my circumstances though so the debt's worth it even if I end up earning < 40K at some public interest firm.
