How are you funding law school?

Post by Kohinoor » Sun May 03, 2009 3:11 am

Was just thinking to myself that the expense of law school may be a factor in keeping minorities out of the highest rungs. Where others can better afford the loans or have parents pay their way and thus are free to go to the absolute best schools that accept them, URMs may more often have to opt for the best school that full rides them. Thoughts?

I'm not sure how many people in their low 20's, minority or no, are in a position to fund law school themselves. And I'd bet that the vast majority of non URM applicants don't have mom and dad footing the bill. So I don't really think URM applicants would find themselves in this scenario that much more often than whites do.

And since a URM will get into a better school than a non-URM with the same numbers, I actually think the opposite is true-- the URM will decide to go to the best school he gets into bc it will be easier to justify taking out full loans for that t25 education.

I think you are exactly right. Even if you assume that anyone can get loans for full COA, you still need cash up front to move, feed yourself, etc. until the loans disburse. If you come from a family that lives hand-to-mouth, even $500 to $1000 in upfront costs could be a dealbreaker.

I have enough cash saved up to cover moving, fees, incidentals, etc. If I put things off until the cycle after next, I'll have enough to cover about half the total cost of attendance.

I'll probably end up posting ads for escorts on cragslist, then just mug the girls. I figure that will cover at least half my tuition.

Wow I love the stereotypical thoughts here. And I wonder what the problem with society is today.

I think that's somewhat racist. There are poor white people and wealthy black people. Obama's kids are a bit better off than some poor white kid in a trailer park in alabama. Even jewish people like me can come from dirt poor backgrounds, as my family does - why should you put spike lee's kid in a poorer bracket than me. Also, with immigrants fpr example, latino immigrants, even if rich, get viewed in the way you say, while bosnian or russian immigrants who are dirt poor but happen to be white - their families are better able to put them through college?

Ditch the sterotypes based on race and have this discussion inclusively

I'm hoping for scholarship considerations of course. I'm a non-trad and will probably cash out my 401k, also have the GI Bill from my military service. But let's say I get into a school I'd REALLY like to go to but would have to pay sticker and it's the standard 35k + COL...I'd be looking at 150k for the 3 year ride like a lot of you.

In this scenario I might try to defer my admission and get a 12-month contract in the sand box (Iraq/Afghanistan). We'll see...it all starts with the LSAT score

It's stereotypical to acknowledge that minorities tend to come from a lower socioeconomic bracket?

You and casper are crazy.

Asking a question based on empirical data is not stereotypical or racist. If you disagree with the data, then state that you disagree with the data. Arguing about Obama's kids or Polish immigrants makes me   because I never said that all blacks are poor or all whites are wealthy. An inclusive discussion that ignored race and paid attention solely to socioeconomic status would be pointless since my question was essentially 'Does socioeconomic status play a role in the underrepresentation of minorities at the highest tiers of legal education?'

I am considering being part of a Heist. In fact, I am currently looking for others to join me in my heist. Need more for the plan, you know. Interested?

Idk about this. I think far more URMs are uninformed about the benefits of attending a T25/T14/T6 versus a cheaper and lower-ranked school. And if they dont know the benefits of a better ranked school, I'd imagine they would be much more likely to settle for a lower ranked school with a significant scholarship or in-state tuition versus a much more expensive option at sticker. I have friends of friends who have done exactly this--gone with the cheaper option at a much, much lower ranked school just because of cost.

I'm also paying for school with loans and some parental help. I turned down a few significant scholarships in the top20, which was (and is) really scary...
