Any other "white" URMs like me worried about interviews?

Post by nicks244 » Tue Oct 30, 2018 4:02 pm

Hey everyone,

So I'm half Mexican (grandparents are from Mexico) but I inherited my father's pasty white skin and last name.

Anyone else in a similar situation worried that admissions officers may think I'm either lying or playing the system? Especially when interviewing for T14 schools.

Easily solved: Write a diversity statement describing your experiences growing up as a (part) Mexican-American.

There are many people who are full Mexican and are also "white," so anyone who's had a cursory review of either race being a social construct and all that or Latin American history will understand that Mexican folks are not all the same skin tone.

Mexican is not a race, and Mexico is a multi-racial country. There are a lot of full white people in Mexico.

Do you think that would "lessen" how diverse I am? As in I wouldn't get as much as a boost versus someone who's fully Mexican-American?
