I had the same problem since I'm not planning to write a DS. I think you have to upload a statement if you check a box. I checked the boxes and then wrote a paragraph explaining my background, but it wasn't a real DS.

Oh, that's an option I hadn't really considered. I guess I just saw that there was no other place for a diversity statement and assumed it had to be a full DS. Thanks!
