You should definitely retake. Getting an LSAT score of 165 or higher will be far more advantageous for your application than applying early. It is possible to get into CCN with your current stats, but a 165+ will get you at least one of HYS.

Retaking.

Dealing with the potential regret of not retaking is something I'd like to avoid. My parents also told me they'd pay for the retake and my applications if I did, and I'd be on my own if I didn't. You really can't say no to that.

It seems like URMs should go for the retake mantra more than its already prevalent status would suggest. If you can go from being one of the top 250 AA URMs in the country by LSAT score to being one of the top 5 by retaking... my goodness.

That'd be going from a 158 to a 168/169, which is probably not realistic for most re-takers.

If you are an AA with a 161 (as some of those being asked to re-take in here are), you're closer to the top 150 or so as things stand right now, which is getting close to the 99th percentile for AAs.

A 161 to 165 jump is more accurately stated as the difference between top ~150 and top 50. Top 5 would probably require at least a 168.

Edit: Just saw your thread, which can make these calculations a bit more accurate. It looks like a 165 would be top 45 among AA URMs (according to 2011-12 data). Top 5 would require a 170+. Top 250 in 2011-12 was actually just above 159, not a 158.

Not to undermine Athlone, who has been a great champion here. Hell he gave me confidence and perspective when I needed it the most but 168 is absolutly possible from 158. I'm not a genius of any sort and below are my results.

Took a prep course already, well take another one. I sucked at games because I wasnt smart enough to make those magical inferences, but after PowerScore I took Velocity which had a brute force style of attack. I would do the same set of games every week (along with PTs and such) until i was able to do a setup in 90 seconds flat.

My point is, there is a path to 168 from 158.
I agree with you. I never doubted the possibility that one could go from 158 to 168. I claimed that it was unlikely ("probably not realistic for most"), which it may be. Most re-takers don't improve by more than a few points, 2 or 3 being more typical jumps. A 10 point jump is remarkable, and more a credit to your individual ability (among other factors) than to the mere act of re-taking itself. The vast majority of re-takers, try as they might, simply aren't going to improve their scores by that kind of margin.

Not trying to be too much of a downer here. I'm all for shooting for the stars and all that, but we do have to be realistic. There is a path to 10 point improvements, but the vast majority of re-takers won't be on it. That being said, smaller improvements can still make a big difference so the merits of re-taking are not buried by my assertions here.

I always heard that it was unrealistic to expect a huge jump especially if you were starting below the median of 150/151. I bought into that assumption and it influenced the way I approached the exam. Then I decided to make a change in thinking and to date, I have increased 25 points from my initial diagnostic.

True, the jump from high 150s to high 160s is a steep climb but to suggest that most are not able to climb that steep is to buy into the myth and doubt that has been ingrained in many who tell us (especially minorities) we can't. This I can never agree with.

This test is helluva learnable with the right tools and attitude. I highly believe most are not able to climb that climb because of self-doubt and buying into the statistics. You get what you put into this exam, as with most anything else in life.

I needed this encouragement because my motivation to study for this retake has taken a serious nose dive. To think that I would be putting in over 30 hours on top of my full time job just for 3 more points makes me want to puke everywhere....repeatedly.

So what are your thoughts on ED? I've heard several opinions and the general consensus seems to be that it's not a good move for URM applicants. What do you all think?

Personally, I'm EDing, but I'm in a fairly unique situation. For most URM applicants, it seems like a bad idea.

If you can, a better idea would be to retake the LSAT in October or December.

Hey Mandy! Is this in affiliation with the Black Ivy League organization or specific to the law school? Would love to get more details on this and spread the word to fellow URMs I have met through CLEO NYC.

Oh ok. I like that last Helen Keller quote on your TLS box by the way. Especially pertinent as I prep for the LSAT :D

Started my apps for Chicago and Cornell on my downtime at work and in between timed LSAT sections. I am SO happy to have my PS and DS done.

Still on the to-do list are an addendum and "why" statements. Can't believe the time is near....

Hmm makes sense that you're getting fee waivers since you already took the LSAT. However, I was pleasantly surprised this morning with a fee waiver from Duke. I find this odd given that I have yet to take the LSAT. I am retaking the LSAT in October, however, and I recently submitted all my final transcripts so I guess they got my stats off LSAC and decided to send a fee waiver my way.

Anyways, check out this spreadsheet which contains useful info on fee waivers: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc ... zcnc#gid=3

i think duke just sent that to a lot of people though... the email i got from them pointed to my "strong academic record" which, to be perfectly honest, doesn't exist. my transcripts are a MESS and i honestly have nightmares that they will keep me out of anywhere worth attending

Quite the quiet crowd around here. Studies are going very well. I think I have finally found a way to crack RC. Currently on a PT schedule where I take 2-3 a week. How is the course going?

Will prob pick up after Oct 5th. The class is great, learning how to target LG and RC (my weakest sections) using their methods has been very helpful.

I'm doing the same regarding PT
