Just finished reading Beloved for the first time as an adult. The prose in that book is sick!

Have any of you tried/had any luck asking for waivers for the non-custodial parent's financial information? I am going on a decade now without any contact with my father, and am not able to obtain any of his information. Being raised by a single parent was hard enough, and I can't imagine law schools would further penalize an applicant for this.

I tried, and contacted one of the schools I was interested and they kind of flat out denied me. I had to go through A LOT to get my dad's info.

I didn't know I needed a copy of their tax returns too, and I am really worried I will not get that at all.

I'm in the process of doing this. I submitted need access with all zeros and unknowns for my noncustodial parent, and I thought I was all set. Then, one school emailed me asking for third-party verification of the "estrangement.

I get that I'm basically asking for free money, so they need to be thorough, but I feel like for me, dealing with this ish EV.ER.Y.TIME. I try to get a bit of education can be legit traumatizing. I do all this work to compartmentalize, put things in the past, etc. etc. and now you want proof. I'm just like: Ugh!

RANT OVER.

So up until this point I've been kind of ignoring the UCLA problems because I didn't feel like watching the videos on YouTube but now I'm all caught up and I'm slightly confused.

The video I just watched had the minority law students voicing their displeasure at being the only minority in the classroom and the pressure of people taking them as the only voice for their race and all of that.....but should any of that particularly surprising? I've been dealing with being the only black kid in my classes since middle school and I expect it to be even worse in law school.

Yes the schools administration and handling of the situation is awful, and the backlash from the student population is ridiculous. But the original problem seems to be something that's faced by all black students regardless of location or education level. Am I missing something here?

ETA: I guess I'm asking I'm we are shocked and outrage or just outraged

Yeah I read Sula years ago. I plan to re-read it though. I'm trying to read 35 books this year. So far I've read 7, so it's going well.

Agree. I don't condone what's going on at UCLA, but at the end of the day, what did they expect going into a top law school? No top law school has tons of black students, except maybe Harvard.

I don't think it's just the isolation that comes with being one out of a handful of black students on campus, it's also the isolation that comes with many of your classmates thinking that you don't belong in the first place. I think that's the particular problem we're seeing at UCLA with all the Sander stuff and now the n-word in the mailbox stuff. There's a tremendous amount of pressure put on you when you're not just expected to represented your race in terms of explaining the whole race's viewpoint on an issue but also when any mistake you may make regardless of degree is then extrapolated to the entire race. In turn, it's hard to feel like you're in a safe space to contribute your ideas when you think everyone (and know that definitely some) around you already think that whatever is going to come out of your mouth is stupid.

totally using this as a to-read list. i read Beloved and Song of Solomon a few years back, but i'm thinking a reread is in order for both. just finished Jazz a few weeks ago and loved it. i'll also look into Patrick Ness.

Patrick Ness is great. He mostly writes Dystopian type fiction, totally different from Toni Morrison and Bell Hooks.
