Re: URM 2013-2014 Cycle Thread
does anyone have an absolute debt number that they won't go over for law school? like 150k, 200k, 50k, etc.?
edit: and as far as NYU ur dates go, I'm stuck at UR1 10/12 -- im pretty sure if i ever get in that I won't go because I won't be getting a large scholly -- 275k + NYC COL is too much for me

It's kind of hard to say, because to say your absolute max debt number is 200K, that basically means you'll settle for nothing less than half tuition. I don't know about y'all, but I don't imagine a lot of schools will be knockin' on my door to hand me half tuition scholarships. But, who knows.californiauser wrote:does anyone have an absolute debt number that they won't go over for law school? like 150k, 200k, 50k, etc.?

As of right now, my only absolute rule is I won't pay sticker.

Re: URM 2013-2014 Cycle Thread
So I ask a T30 school for a last minute fee waiver.
They tell me, send them my LSAT/GPA
I get queasy and am like ok. So I do it and tell them they are my top choice and I am AA male.
I am way below the 25ths for both, but they just extended their app deadline to Aug 1.
Does the fact that after sending them my GPA/LSAT, they grant me a waiver and say I should come visit the school mean I am in contention...or are they just being nice? I have done this with other schools and they said my numbers are too low to grant a waiver to. Probably like 3-5 others said no.
Am I reading too much into this? this is someone up on the admissions food chain that emailed me back btw. not a student or secretary

I came into the law school process like "Oh I wont take on more than 100K debt" but now, like Ev, I have to say I won't pay sticker.EvMont wrote:It's kind of hard to say, because to say your absolute max debt number is 200K, that basically means you'll settle for nothing less than half tuition. It's my understanding that fee waivers are generally a good sign but nothing to bank on regarding your chances of acceptance. Many schools will grant fee waivers with only the intention of implying that your're a viable candidate but this could be because you're actually a very compettiive applicant with a solid chance at admission or they're just trying to game the rankings/increase the number of applicants to their school. This isn't to say you won't get in or that your chances aren't very good, but certainly don't bet on it because of the fee waiver.BankruptMe wrote:So I ask a T30 school for a last minute fee waiver.

I think it's hard for me set a number because I have to weigh the cost/benefit of each particular school.californiauser wrote:does anyone have an absolute debt number that they won't go over for law school? like 150k, 200k, 50k, etc.?

Even amongst the T14 all schools are not created equally, especially concerning my specific goals.

I wouldn't go over 100k for any school besides HYS. After working for a few years I really value my paycheck and can't justify paying six-figures for a law degree. Plus, as a URM I think you can go to a lower-ranked school and have a good chance (or at least higher than your non-URM peers) of getting the same type of opportunities.californiauser wrote:does anyone have an absolute debt number that they won't go over for law school? like 150k, 200k, 50k, etc.?

I feel like a lot of you all are going to be gunners and it's really upsetting that I won't be there to witness the hilarity of it all.

Thanks! I'm sure you can get them to offer you whatever given your other fantastic scholarship offers. Or you can just withdraw if you aren't interested. Hope it comes soon though!
Thanks! Hope your cycle is going well!Kool-Aid wrote:Congrats!teampeeta wrote:In at Columbia today. No scholarship $, though.

Thanks! I'm going to try. I have work and I don't get a ton of time off, so I can probably only go to a couple of ASWs. I have to see what makes sense closer to April. It kind of sucks because that means things are going to be more expensive then.AAJD2B wrote:Congrats! Columbia is an amazing school. Will you be visiting?teampeeta wrote:In at Columbia today.
