Is it just me or is this thread really slow? Around this time last year, the 2012-2013 URM thread was in high gear and super active. Perhaps this is a reflection of the dwindling number of applicants and by extension, minority students??

Yeah, it does seem a little dry in here. Maybe everyone is really focused on writing their PS, DS and Why X stuff lol idkAAJD2B wrote:Is it just me or is this thread really slow? LOL yeah, I hope so. Speaking of which, have you done yours? I have my PS and DS done, now I just need my Why statements.mandyjay11 wrote:Yeah, it does seem a little dry in here. I feel like I should be doing something more though. I am so used to being busy. I may start back studying again in the event I need to re-take. Also, I miss studying for the LSAT, lol.

I am in the midst of my 5 day break from all things law school after Saturday's test. I have been studying for it non stop since January so I needed a short break. I will say, I do miss the structure that my days had when studying for that test hahaAAJD2B wrote:LOL yeah, I hope so. Speaking of which, have you done yours? I started my PS and DS but they are very, very rough. I am only doing like 3 why X statements for Penn, UVA, and Duke (those are really the only places I DEFINITELY want to go to) I have to work on my SEO application too, which is not as labor intensive.

Re: URM 2013-2014 Cycle Thread
I filled in my basic info on the SEO application and wrote a draft of my personal statement as well as the basic info on the LSAC applications. But this week, this week is about doing no actual work related to law school (other than figuring out what the hell my DS is going to be about).mandyjay11 wrote:I am in the midst of my 5 day break from all things law school after Saturday's test. I'm basically in the same spot in my application process. REALLY rough PS and DS. I'm doing why Why X statements later in the month, since I have a couple of visits planned.mandyjay11 wrote: I am in the midst of my 5 day break from all things law school after Saturday's test. It would be nice to see this thread be more active though. I imagine in will be later in the cycle.

Out of curiosity, how many of us took the October LSAT or are taking December/February?

I guess I should plan visits. I really don't have the fund to visit a ton of schools, though. Which ones are you going to?EvMont wrote:I'm basically in the same spot in my application process. Yup, I am also applying to SEO. My app for that is pretty much complete except for the photo part (and LSAT and retrieving my SAT scores). Even though they say the photo is optional I sort of think its necessary.
I'll need to try and arrange to take a professional photo.

I sat October and feel super confident about it. I figured if I scored a 165 or higher, I am calling it a day. I really don't want to retake.MoMettaMonk wrote:Out of curiosity, how many of us took the October LSAT or are taking December/February?

I'm gonna visit Penn, mostly because it's my #1 and I know they do the whole yield protect thing. So, I want to try to avoid that. I'll probably try to visit NYU and Columbia as well, since for me it's on the way to Penn and I have a couple of friends in NYC who will let crash on their couch. That'll probably be it, because yeah...I'm not made of money. hahamandyjay11 wrote:I guess I should plan visits. I really don't have the fund to visit a ton of schools, though. Speaking of visits William & Mary's BLSA has a weekend event coming up on November 1st and 2nd. I am not sure if I will attend though. It depends on how I scored...I may be in a good or sour mood.

Ahh, forgot all about the SAT score part. I gotta dig that up from somewhere. I also read the photo part as being necessary.AAJD2B wrote:

I took in October, and I've been thinking about cancelling all week. I'm sure I did ok, but I'll probably re-take in December. I wasn't completely ready for it.

We're here to learn! YP is when schools reject you because they'd like to boost their numbers--in this case, selectivity. It affects URMs specifically because some of us have borderline numbers. Some URMs have experienced being accepted into one or two of HYSCCN and rejected from all of MVP. :Omandyjay11 wrote:This might be a dumb question, but what is the yield protect thing?EvMont wrote: I'm gonna visit Penn, mostly because it's my #1 and I know they do the whole yield protect thing. whoa... I had no idea! I saw last cycle their numbers were INSANE. That worries me because some days I actually feel like I have a fighting chance.Brettanomyces wrote:We're here to learn! It has been said that the best way to combat YP is to express plenty of interest in the T14 school you'd like to attend. One way to do this is to write a compelling Why X piece.mandyjay11 wrote:whoa... I had no idea! I saw last cycle their numbers were INSANE. To be fair, they don't usually outright reject people. You'll usually be waitlisted. There's not all that much data on going from waitlist ----> accept or waitlist ----> reject though because a lot of people put in that situation just withdraw and go to HYSCCN.mandyjay11 wrote:whoa... I am definitely do a why X so hopefully that helps. I'm also probably going to apply to like two schools from HYSCCN (more if they give me waivers). I just want to/need to manage my expectations for those schools.

You're right. Most of the stuff on lsn.i and numbers lumps waitlists and rejections together in a big, sad pile.
