Harvard gives institutional loans as well as need-based financial aid for Internationals as well. Them and Yale are the only schools to do so. I'm sure I'd obviously end up owing more money at Harvard, but I could attend if admitted due to their financial aid program.

I'm guessing switching my app to RD is pretty much a death knell for my NU app? I know it's risky to do it without even knowing if I'll get in at Harvard, but I don't want to have any regrets.

Well do you feel comfortable at Duke? Or do you think you're a lock for other schools that you've applied to. Going all in for Harvard is risky, even though I think you're in for sure. They don't ask for my opinion on who to admit though. So it all depends on your comfort level I guess!

Its rough because you have to get Harvard in order for this to work. Only you know your risk tolerance here.
Also, do you know that Harvard will meet your entire need or may meet it?

See bolded.
Yeah, in the end I think a very substantial amount of the aid would come from loans, but some grant aid as well. Not sure how much they usually give in terms of grants, but depending on how much they give ($20-30k a year?) it could make it much closer to NU than the initial $150k figure.

Worm, I guess if I did switch to RD, for it to pay-off I wouldn't necessarily have to get into Harvard (thought that is really the goal), but I would have to get into another T-14 school with a very substantial scholarship to even be able to attend. I don't know how my cycle will play out, but I do feel like if my Dec score is higher, I'd be very competitive (seems like scholarships are really hard to predict though).

wbrother, I do think I'd enjoy Duke, but I'd have to get a pretty big scholarship there as well to be able to attend. It's kind of a shot in the dark since I don't have the info I really would need to make an informed decision at this point. Hell, NU might not even accept me ED and could just defer me to RD (that's actually what I was sure was going to happen until H threw me for a loop with the interview invite).

I saw that. Do the institutional loans make up the full 60k per year including living expenses?

Yeah, they cover the entire Cost of Attendance. Plus I have some savings as well that would help cover living expenses. If I did get into Harvard, I would be able to attend, I'd probably just be more in debt.

I didn't realize that. I guess I did not read their financial aid info carefully enough. Some in the Harvard thread said ~70% of people with interviews get admitted so it seems like your odds are pretty high. However, what Worm said seems valid. You have to determine your risk tolerance.

I chose to write my diversity statements about a disability issue and not my URM status. I briefly mention the URM element in my personal statement. I also did not think to include anything about being married with a kid. It's crazy to stress over this after submitting everything, I know, but is this something I should think about redoing/resubmitting? Would schools even be open to a new statement?
I think you should stick with what your gut told you to write about. Having a disability is definitely something you should write about if you feel it makes you a diverse candidate. I did not write about my URM status either (talked about low socio-economic status) and Harvard accepted me, so don't worry about it, they will see the URM box marked "yes". Having said that, if you were to get waitlisted at your school(s) of choice, you might consider sending an addendum about other diversity issues.

Pretty depressed about my NYU deferral. Haven't gotten one acceptance yet! (166, PR, 3.7). Granted I applied a little later, but still! Anyone else still waiting around for their first one?

Me too.

::hug::
Me too. Granted I submitted my applications in mid-November and just recently went complete at a few schools (and still not complete at Harvard, grr), but I'm getting so nervous! With so many people getting in already, it feels like they're won't be any room left. :( I didn't expect to be this nervous.
