So I'm a Mestizo born in South America...my family is European mixed with Native Indian from Argentina. However, they do not keep tribal records in Argentina...we know my grandfather was Native Indian...am I part native indian/ part white? My dad is dark skinned while my mother is very white-looking...I fall somewhere in between. Can I check both boxes?

Thanks peeps.

You're South American (Latino/Hispanic). Check whichever boxes you have always checked.

I'm going with Latino/Hispanic.
I imagine Native American referring to North American. I've never heard a native south American referred to as a native American.

What did you check on the census, LSAC questionnaire, high school standardized testing, SAT, etc?

the census defines American Indian/native American as
"American Indian and Alaska Native. A person having origins in any of the original peoples of North and South America (including Central America) and who maintain tribal affiliation or community attachment."
the bolded part is what key for law schools admissions if you can show either one you shouldn't check the box

Why the eye roll? Gatorlaw is correct. Have you been to any rural or tropical parts of South America?

Because I understand the idea, I just disagree. There are two continents: South America and North America. There are, therefore, two groups of people: South American and North American. There is also a country that contains America in the name. Saying that America is a continent, not a country is disingenuous because a) it's two continents and b) if the people from the United States of America can't be called Americans because America isn't the official name than neither can people from South America since the continent is actually South America.
