Question was: How much of a boost does UNC give URM's? Basically, to clarify, I just wanted to know does UNC gives boost for URM's?

This answer also goes for every other ABA accredited law school you've ever heard of.daminor wrote:unc0mm0n1 wrote:Yesdaminor wrote:Question was: How much of a boost does UNC give URM's? Basically, to clarify, I just wanted to know does UNC gives boost for URM's?

Thanks so can you explain how this boost works. Are the expectations lower for URM's, specifically can you get in with lower GPA and lower LSAT if URM?

Re: UNC and URM
The expectations aren't necessarily lower, the boost exists because Blacks, Hispanics and Native Americans traditionally are not given the same opportunities from an educational standpoint as other groups. Blacks usually get the largest boosts (about 7-8 LSAT points). Every other URM group gets less. URM's with high GPAs (3.8-4.0) usually have wildly successful cycles if they break a 160 LSAT, given the boost. On the other hand, URMs with lower GPA's (3.0-3.5) and lower LSATs (160's), are way more unpredictable. Some end up at Duke, then again some end up at Brooklyn Law. It all depends on you're softs and how well you demonstrate ties to your heritage via your Diversity Statement.daminor wrote:SupraVln180 wrote:This answer also goes for every other ABA accredited law school you've ever heard of.daminor wrote:unc0mm0n1 wrote: Yes

Now if you're not black, but hispanic, Puerto Ricans and Mexicans are the only groups that traditionally get a URM boost (about 4 LSAT points). "Other" Hispanics cannot count on a boost, but sometimes it happens. I'm Cuban and it seems like some schools gave me a boost and some schools didn't. Being "other" hispanic is alot more unpredictable.
Also if you are Native American you can expect about the same boost as being Black, maybe slightly less.
Basically, if you are a URM, cast as wide of a net as possible and take advantage of all the fee waivers you get. You might be suprised which schools you get into. Hope this helps.

Yes, thanks for adding this. If you are Native American, you usually need a tribe card and need to demonstrate ties to your tribal heritage in your diversity statement. You can't just check the box b/c you're Great aunt was native american or something.serdog wrote:SupraVln180 wrote:le.
