It's totally possible to study although a lot easier from the mailroom than as an assistant. The problem with being an assistant is that you are on call 24/7. I really loved getting woken up at 9 AM on a Saturday by my boss asking when his various appointments that day were and where. The other problem is that you actually have homework as an assistant. You are constantly expected to read scripts and with the 9-8 or 9 hours it doesn't leave that much time for LSAT prep. Still, it is by far the best way to make the connections necessary for entertainment law. Those firms are very secretive and hard to break into. Just going to a top school or a top entertainment school like USC/UCLA usually won't be enough. It's best to have a personal connection (even if its just that your boss can recommend you) if you want those jobs. One thing that will be hard though, is that you do not want to let on that you are targeting entertainment law if you follow my advice. Agencies/management firms DO NOT like applicants and employees who don't appear completely committed to their particular field. Even wanting to break out into production is frowned on. That's mostly because everyone in LA is a head case, but its worth keeping in mind.khodorko wrote:Haha, seriously. I was being quite generous with the $30K mark, it's definitely good experience but financially not the best post-undergrad option. My friends who have pursued that path are all very dedicated to their jobs but are into their 3rd year and still not making a comfortable LA salary. In terms of studying for the LSAT, production companies and agencies have the worst hours from what I hear.
I work at a tech company with normal 40hr weeks and studying for the LSAT was no problem at all. I tried to put myself on lock down for two months, going out less and studying 10 hrs/week outside of my class and to be honest, I could have done more if I wanted to. I think it might be easier to take on the LSAT when you don't have homework and exams to prepare for, you can easily up that 161.

Re: LGBT Class of 2014
I think you're missing two crucial nuances:flexityflex86 wrote:Just curious, but why is this topic in the underrepresented forum. What statistical evidence is there that LGBT are underrepresented at anywhere other than Notre Dame and Cardozo? With the exception of transgendered students I hardly think that the homosexual community is underrepresented relative to their percentage in the US.
1 - When discussing underrepresented minorities in the law school admissions context, it's minorities underrepresented in the practice of law.... not simply law schools. Obviously today there are far more openly LGBT students than 20-30 years ago (in fact, more than even just 10 years ago). However, in law firms and the legal practice, it is a much different story. When we venture out into the workforce, we will be very much so underrepresented. The ability to live openly and honestly in the workplace after graduation is a huge issue for LGBT law students. The more openly gay law students, the more openly gay lawyers, the more tolerant environment for the next generation of law students.
2 - Within this context, I don't consider being LGBT worthy of URM status. Openly LGBT is underrepresented without a doubt, however. This is why I think the Diversity Statement is appropriate/needed for LGBT applicants.

But "one in ten is not enough; recruit, recruit, recruit!" sounds so much better as a chant than "Approximately between 3 and 1 percent of Americans is LGB identified; recruit, recruit, recruit!".polinerdemory wrote:Somewhat related?: http://www.washingtonpost.com/local/9-m ... story.html

Sent in my deposit to Temple last week. Also went to Temple UG, so I'm excited to be hanging around Philly for the next few years.

also, isn't 5% high?
hey -- maybe there are some LGBTers who aren't out.

Re: LGBT Class of 2014
law school's a pretty small community (even at columbia) and people gossip a lot. even though there are a lot more people per class in my undergrad, i would say that i can guess reasonably well how many out lgbt there are.neonx wrote:

i would never call 5% high. it's reasonable. i guess i just had higher hopes for the results of the selection bias.
and the closeted lgbt don't really count. they're not part of the dating pool (mostly) and aren't part of the community. they're totes still people i'd be friends with, but they're functionally identical to a hetero.

I've accepted a scholarship at Seton Hall, so I'm not worried about the LGBT community because it is huge in the NYC area. However, I am on the wait list at W&M and wonder about its community. Anybody know?

You could always go to NYU, which from anecdotal evidence is pretty gay...misterbingley wrote:everyone i've spoken to at columbia estimates 5% of the student body is gay. which is not bad, i guess. i didnt know what i was expecting, but i was kinda disappointed
