Yeah basically. I live on the East Coast/South. Distance wise, Iowa is closer but it seems like the price tags on the plane tickets aren't reflecting thatGaucho wrote:how was placement determined? are you just placed at the closest site to your house

Re: CLEO 2011?
So I just heard from a friend of mine in law school that she is a CLEO scholar and has all the "same benefits" as a Cleo scholar without doing the 6 week summer institute but by going to an ATL weekend "attitude is everything" summit they had. Can anybody corroborate this story and tell me if they will have the same chances at scholarship money as well?

This is what I keep telling myself. I'm from WA and ended up in Iowa, no West Coast love for me.mez06 wrote:I'll be at the Iowa one. San Diego beats Iowa hands down but I would probably have too much fun there!
Ohhhhh well. Gotta make the best of it!

How soon after paying do you find out where your placement will be? Also does anyone know how scholarship recipients are determined?

Your friend is actually an "Associate." I know, I know, CLEO is so crazy with all their labels. See below for the distinction:Malcolm8X wrote:So I just heard from a friend of mine in law school that she is a CLEO scholar and has all the "same benefits" as a Cleo scholar without doing the 6 week summer institute but by going to an ATL weekend "attitude is everything" summit they had. Hope that helps! From --LinkRemoved--
There are two categories of students who participate in the CLEO law school program – CLEO/Thurgood Marshall Fellows and CLEO/Thurgood Marshall Associates. Students who are enrolled and successfully complete the CLEO Summer Institute are referred to as Fellows. Students who participate in the Attitude Is Essential Pre-Law Seminar are referred to as Associates. The difference between these two groups of students is that Fellows are eligible to receive financial assistance awards and Associates are not. However, all law students, regardless of their classification, are eligible to participate in CLEO academic seminars and receive other services provided by the program, like academic support. Once CLEO Fellows and Associates graduate law school and pass the bar they enter into the category of distinguished alumni.
I got 2 things in the mail so far, and I think they send a few other things, too, like the travel info, etc. My address changed though, so I hope the USPS forwards my stuff to me!!!sceva31st wrote:Can anyone explain to me the purpose of the 4 SASEs? Anyway, 88 DAYS TIL IOWA!! So excited!
--EDIT: never thought I'd be so stoked to go to Iowa, haha. I guess I'm just ready to get the whole law school process started--

Been a couple of weeks, waiting on my placement letter. Does it have any info about what to bring/do to be prepared?

I envy you guys. Unfortunately, I work full time and can't afford to be away for so long. But I am applying for the Attitude is Essential weekend they offer. Guess I'll have to settle for "associate" status. Is anyone else signing up for AIE??

Re: CLEO 2011?
It's definitely not settling. I was at the ASAP seminar which is held concurrently with the AIE and it was awesome. We had a lot of the same guest speakers for dinner, but they really pack a lot into those 3 days. Plus you get $250, free hotel and meals. Have fun!AyePrice wrote:I envy you guys. Haha I would, but I'm pretty sure CLEO starts an official one for us where the student hosts from the schools answer questions. But you know I'll be joining once we get the announcement.mez06 wrote:Kitty, you know you are the natural selection for whose who in starting the Team Iowa facebook page lol

Is anyone planning on doing the 6 week institute AND the AIE Seminar? Does anyone think it would be helpful versus repetitive?

I don't know how you could. The dates overlap.mez06 wrote:Is anyone planning on doing the 6 week institute AND the AIE Seminar? Does anyone think it would be helpful versus repetitive?
Just mailed my 2k check to CLEO. It sure was painful but I really think [hope] it will be worth it in the long run.
on another note, TJSL's campus looks amazing. Apparently its brand new as of 2010...

LOL all of this San Diego celebration is making me a bit pissed at the thought of being in Iowa for a month and a half. So I googled how the party scene is in Des Moines (yes we're here to study/learn but let's be a bit realistic) and the search isn't looking so hot.

lol @mez06, I'm sure there will be something to look forward to in Iowa. If anything you'll be able to focus and concentrate on the actual course work, better than us people in San Diego will be able to.
