Am I a URM?

Postby jaminben » Thu May 27, 2010 10:52 am

My dad was born in Africa (Egypt to be specific), am I African American?

The thing says black OR African American so clearly you don't have to be black to fall into this category. I called LSAC and they had no idea what I should do.

Helpp!!

This is sort of a tough call because Egypt is in Africa, but it is grouped with the Middle East. I don't really think you are considered an URM. I would ask an adcom if you are really concerned. However, considering the big difference between going to a school ranked in the 70s versus going to a top 25 school, I would exploit the loophole. It's their vault that they choose to be vague.

I checked African American (half black and half white) as does Pres Obama who is also half black and half white. However, people mistake me for an Arab. Pres Obama's father is from Kenya. Kenya and Egypt are both in Africa; therefore, I say check AA unless your dad is white or you obviously look white.
