Zoroastrian Applicant

Post by Royal68 » Thu Feb 04, 2010 4:37 pm

Simple question.... The world population of Zoroastrians is hovering around 600 000... motly in India and Iran, basically a dying religion and way of life. How would adcomms look at this. Possible URM? Thanks in advance for replies.

write a diversity statement but don't check the "URM" box.

I think if there were one Zoroastrian student in any law school they would technically be an over-represented minority, since 1 out of 500 or so is probably bigger than the fraction of the total US population that is Zoroastrian. Also Zoroastrian is not really an ethnicity, or at least I don't think it will be considered as such for the purpose of law school admissions. My speculation is that you would get some sort of diversity bump though.

Definitely not URM. Certainly an interesting bit of diversity, but I don't think your religion is gonna get you any sort of admissions bump (unless of course you write an awesome PS about it, but that'd be more about your writing skills than anything else).

yea your right i dont think it is an ethnicity and it is definitely not a race. But it is a religion that is currently in a diaspora. But yea i think your right.. might get a little boost but nothing spectacular

Cool bit of diversity, worth writing a DS about. It will get some attention to your app (always helpful), but it will not give you any significant boost other than maybe breaking a tie with applicants with the same numbers and similar other softs.

URMs are African American, Native American, Puerto Rican and Mexican American only. On your apps, you will have to check either European/Middle Eastern (if your family is from Iran) or South Asian/Indian (if your family is from India). Neither of those gives any boost.

Now i see why we are not considered URM LOL (yes, fellow Iranian here)
By the way Royal I am Zoroastrian too and I used it in my PS. I highly doubt that fact alone helped my application at all. Nonetheless, if you have any specific questions don't hesitate to pm me.
