Fordham a TTT school?

Post by Darth Topher » Tue May 20, 2008 12:31 pm

Does anyone out there think that Forham is a TTT (Top Tier Toilet) school? :?

Absolutely, but I've heard Fordham is pretty solid.

Not a TTT - but a lot more risk than there should be considering cost and the difficulty of getting in.

Indeed. Take the $$ at Cardozo or SJU if you ask me. At least then people won't know right off the bat that you couldn't get in anywhere else. They'll just assume you knew you weren't good enough and then you hit them with your skillz.

But that's the thing - I feel the same way about Cardozo. I mean, there are tons of Fordham/GW/BC/BU cross admits, and I just don't see Fordham unless you're dead set on NYC and would never consider being anywhere else. Cardozo numbers could get you into one of those pretty solid Midwestern state schools. You might not get NYC biglaw, but your chances of that aren't really going to be much worse than Cardozo, and the consolation prize is a million times better.

I can't tell if the DB'ness is a joke or not. Please clarify.

Ok, for the people who are not joking, what's your opinion? I keep hearing about Fordham being a school on the rise.

I think Fordham's medians are too high to be considered TTT. A 166, 3.6 is competitive against every school outside of the T-14.

If it were hard to get into hell, would hell not be a toilet?

It would, but clearly not TTT as hell is certainly the lowest tier.

Well, I don't think it's a toilet: I just think prospects are really terrible under the median for what it takes to get in. Lots of people want NYC and Fordham is the school beneath NYU/CLS/Cornell. It's just that NYC is so desired by others that sub-median performance is a big risk. I think it's risky to be below the median at any non-T14 (and a couple of those), but in NYC, crap jobs are even worse because of the COL and hours.

Agreed. It's ranking is boosted by being in NY. Just look at the medians even at Brooklyn and Cardozo. They kind of crush the schools around them in ranking. Why? If you ask me, it's because everyone wants to be in NYC regardless of what it costs and what they may be giving up.

Fordham is a great school if 1) you want to work in NYC 2) you want to work in corporate law. Fordham's UG and grad schools are on par with Pace and CUNY Hunter, so maybe that hasn't helped the law school's reputation. Before I knew anything about law schools, when my friend said he want to Fordham Law I was like, "oh, that's OK I guess."

Fordham is NOT a TTT law school. Granted it is not HYS or even CLS, NYU or Cornell, it does offer a competitive placement in NY (as long as you finish in top 50%). Outside the Northeast, Fordham's name loses some of its cred but it is a good school. A lot of the people on TLS think that name recognition is end-all for job placement. That is only partially true in any case. If you bust your ass at Fordham, you will have good job prospects. Provided you wanna work in the NY area, and you don't mind going to a Jesuit institution.

Michael Clayton (George Clooney) went to Fordham Law, and he drove a Benz before it was blown up. So there.

Placing close to 50% of your class in biglaw is pretty good. In fact I would say that Fordham places as well, if not better, than any school outside the T-14 for NYC. However the problem is if you are below the median, jobs paying 60K-90K are not as lucrative as they would be in other cities, because of the high cost of living.
