NYU vs. GULC ($$)

Post by sittykitty » Fri May 19, 2017 4:24 pm

Hello! I am looking at NYU at full sticker or GULC at a $35k/year scholarship. I like DC more than I like NYC. I have more friends in NYC than I have in DC. I am debt-averse, but employment prospects are very important as well. I want to litigate in some form or other post-grad, and would be happy joining a BigLaw litigation group, but would love the chance to work as a health policy advocate and do impact litigation at some point in my career.

Any advice would be helpful. I would especially love to hear from NYU grads about the debt load, or GULC grads about how difficult it was to get a job out of law school. If you are/were a median student, your insight would be extra welcome!

If your goal is PI then georgetown seems like the better bet here

What kind of PI are you looking at? And how much debt would you be taking on at Georgetown?

I'm looking at eventually working in health policy, but realistically I'll probably start out in Biglaw. Georgetown's looking like $128,964 before interest; NYU would be fully debt-financed at $255,366 before interest. Sorry, I deleted my original post because I had a stroke and put down way too much personal information.

And you don't have any in-between options?

NYU is a better school for PI, but that's way too much debt if you plan on starting in biglaw. Georgetown has a worse LRAP and much worse chances at biglaw, but at least it's cheaper. Honestly, neither of these are great options for you.

I'd take Georgetown at $35k/year over NYU at sticker.

One thing you should consider is that PSLF will probably be abolished by the time you graduate law school. NYU has made it clear that LRAP will still exist, either in its current really awesome form or will revert back to being what it was pre-PSLF, which is basically akin to what other law schools have. I would check with Georgetown to see what their post-PSLF LRAP plan is before enrolling, because that is still a lot of debt to repay.

Well and also make sure NYU's pre-PSLF LRAP was generous to the tune of $120k.
