Columbia v. NYU

Hi all! I am having a hard time with this choice. Want to go into big law, but am interested in some specific topic areas that NYU has *seemingly* better coverage in. Interested in potentially clerking. Went to Columbia undergrad too. Want to stay in NYC long term.

NYU is giving me some money, Columbia none. On Harvard waitlist. I got better money at other schools, but need to stay in NYC if not for Harvard/Yale because of some personal reasons. Money isn't a huge factor for me in this decision in general.

What would you guys do? Any thoughts?

I have until Friday.

(pls do not quote)

Probably should take better money at other t13 schools, but if you have more $ from NYU go there instead of Columbia

Well, since you haven't provided anything in the way of details... NYU, I guess.

I'm having a hard time understanding what "personal reasons" keep you in NYC if you're not going to Harvard/Yale. Is it something to do with an ancient gypsy curse? (Been re-watching Buffy lately...)

Family reasons and my boyfriend.

Other offers:
Cornell - 120k
Duke - 90k
Chicago - 45k
NYU - 60k

Nothing from Penn, Georgetown, Columbia.

Sigh, you should really go to Cornell, but obviously you're not going to so I guess NYU?

I'd take Cornell, but you have a very strange family/boyfriend situation if you can only go away for school if it's... one they approve of? I'm not sure what magic qualities Harvard has that means it would be ok for you to move away for that school but not for another.

If you really have to stay in NYC (again, this makes no sense), go for NYU. But you have a good offer at Cornell, and it's a lot of money to leave on the table.

If you have to stay in NYC, then NYU.

by grades??
I think Duke is the right choice but I bet you will just pick NYU anyway.

Your goal is to be in NYC long term, and Cornell is the cheapest option?

I would pick Cornell. Huge feeder to NYC and you can limit your debt.

But you say you *have* to be in NYC and money doesn't matter, so idk pick whichever campus you like.

Cornell seems like the best choice, but if its between NYU with 60k and CLS with 0, I think it would be pretty silly to pick CLS.

If money is no object, then obviously Columbia for NYC biglaw. If it's a small factor, then NYU.

This is far from "obvious". NYU students who want biglaw get it.

What specific topic areas are you referring to at NYU? Also, when you say money's not a huge factor, you mean you're not paying so it's literally irrelevant?

What does "need to stay in NYC if not for Harvard/Yale" mean? What makes those schools different from others in terms of geography? Because new england is closer? It sounds like maybe you don't *need* to stay in new york?

Yeah, this seems like a "will only leave for preftige" sort of situation. How can you justify leaving the city for a basic degree like Cornell?

Cornell is your best option OP, followed by Duke and then NYU and Columbia. Don't be swayed by name and prestige. Cornell does a great job of getting you where you want to go, and at a much, much cheaper cost
