UGA vs Emory

Postby JRP1994 » Mon Apr 03, 2017 3:43 pm

UGA
• In-state tuition
• No initial scholarship offer
• Potential for additional scholarship money after 4/1 or 4/15, but assuming sticker price
• Tuition: around $20k/yr
• 3 year tuition estimate (not factoring in cost of living/other expenses): $60,000

Emory
• $66k scholarship (22k/yr)
• Tuition: around $32k/yr
• 3 year tuition estimate (not factoring in cost of living/other expenses): $96,000

Main interests:
- Criminal Law
- Litigation
- Public Interest
- Not committed to staying in GA, but would be perfectly happy working in Atlanta

I see no reason to pick UGA over Emory here. Just be aware that both of these schools will basically commit you to staying in Georgia, even if you're not committed now.

Have you tried negotiating Emory's offer with UGA?

I'm going to try that soon. I also have a $90k offer from Mercer, my undergrad school. I'm not going there because I don't want to be locked into the middle GA market, but it might be worth a little leverage.

For 50% more debt, you are not 50% more likely to get a better outcome at Emory. I doubt there is much leverage to be had at either school with a Mercer offer, but there isn't harm in trying.

Get a much deserved discount from UGA with that Emory offer, then go to UGA.

This boils down to - Do you for sure want to do criminal/prosecution?

If so, the benefits of Emory (basically a better ATL biglaw score + Atlanta location) are gone. If you want to do criminal law, your grades/shool are going to matter less and the more important thing is a passion for criminal law.

If you want to do civil lit, this decision is basically about the money. I would also say UGA locks you into GA more than Emory.

Are you financing with loans? If you aren't I could see spending an extra 30k for Emory. If you ARE, then go to UGA.

I'd keep in mind that COL in Atlanta will be greater than in Athens, so that'll inflate the price difference between the two schools even more.
