but recommending Michigan with that debt would make me cringe

Both quite risky options, especially given your extremely vague goals. Don't do it.

I'd retake. 200k+ for any school is too much money, and WUSTL isn't a great option for big law.

Retake. Reapply. Sounds like a 165-168 LSAT put you here. A couple hundred more hours of studying and you'll get the 170's and better offers. Apply early in the cycle too.

Yeah I actually like wustl a lot as a current student, and I had somewhat vague goals going in as well, but 120k at wustl means you're still looking at paying around 40k in tuition over three years, not to mention cost of living. And for an area you have no ties to either. I don't think that's necessarily as catastrophic as some other choices 0Ls on this site make, but it's not ideal and WILL add a level of stress to your life as a student, and probably later on in life too.

As an about to graduate wustl student, the above characterizations of the school is absurd. Maybe the current 2L class had issues, but it's largely overblown. Few people from the class of 2016 transfered, and the class is more collegial than not.

I agree that people are being overly dramatic about WashU, but stats don't lie with regards to transfers. Just looking at last year's 509 forms from a number of T14 schools shows that WashU had a lot of transfers out. There could be many reasons for that, but it's clearly happening.

I think a lot of that has to do with the fact that people really want to get into a T14 and wustl's grade inflation and lack of publishing after top 1/3 makes that a realistic possibility for a larger than normal portion of 1Ls. Not saying that nobody transfers out because they dislike the school, but I think most of the people who I go to school with genuinely like it here. That said, I think op should be careful before committing to over 100k in debt after interest to go here.

Both are good schools but what is your LSAT score and how many times have you taken it?

As a former WUSTLer I would choose Michigan. WUSTL is not a bad school and I had a great time attending WUSTL. IMO the environment was pretty good and a majority of my friends enjoyed the social/academic side of attending WUSTL.

However, with that said, the purpose of attending law school for 95% of the population is to get a job. Michigan does a tremendously better job with that than WUSTL. Biglaw/Midlaw goes way deeper at Michigan vs WUSTL. Some of the regional mid law firms in Indianapolis, Detroit, Columbus, or Cleveland are willing to dig to median if at Michigan or perhaps even lower if you have ties to the area. WUSTL can get you nearly anywhere you want to go if you are in the top 20-25%. However, your chances of getting a good job are prob 2x better at Michigan.

In the end, what good is it if you graduate with 50k in debt but don't really have a career?
