NYU (sticker) v. BU ($$$)

Postby myguitarisinmymind » Thu May 07, 2015 11:36 pm

Within a few grand:
BU: COA after scholarship = ~100k
NYU (not 100% sure, but most likely they give me either nothing or almost nothing): COA = ~255k

Rich brat financing via inheritance (sorry). If I go to BU, I'll be debt-free and have some serious savings post-graduation. I would probably have to take out ~50k in loans for NYU.

I'm from New England and enjoy living in Boston, a few ties with employers through internships but nothing earth-shaking. I just want to be in the Northeast long term, so New York (or even DC, etc.) would also be great. Main drawback to NYC is that it's (duh) absurdly expensive.

3.75/169 (2 takes)

Not dead set on BigLaw, but my concern is that at BU, I'd be shutting myself out of the opportunities available at NYU right out of the gate. Obviously the job prospects and potential earnings at NYU are far, far better and 50k of debt is not terrible for a T6. On the other hand, I can afford to go to BU and get a middling job, so it's not like I'm gonna be broke if I don't hit the top of my class. I'll have zero debt as well as a savings cushion, and that's very appealing.

I can't get outside my head, so apologies if I'm being an idiot. Is there an obvious right answer?

How about Cornell? or Virginia? were you a late applicant? Cheaper COA and Weggman's make Ithaca a great option if you wanna stay the northeast (if snagged at the right price, which it should be with your stats).

NYU if you're inheritance financing.

The reason why people don't like paying sticker is because sticker debt is terrible. You borrow 250k to go through school and pay back 400k when all is said and done. You're forced to make monthly 3k payments; it's an ankle monitor. Dropping 200k cash for a degree from NYU isn't that bad, you'll get a much greater ROI than if you wasted 3 years at BU.

Neither. Retake and apply to t14 again. Spend the year working or traveling. Get $$$ at one of the other schools.

Get a few more questions right and go to NYU for close to the price BU is now.

Reapply and retake

NYU for sure since you're not taking out the loans. You'll make that money back five years out of law school and have a better career trajectory than if you had gone to BU.

Also, can I borrow a few hundred thousand to play poker? We'll split the winnings 60-40. I need a wise TLS businessperson to stake me.

Law schools might as well raise tuition to 100k, because all these rich families clearly don't give a damn.

1 or two more LSAT points can make a world of difference here.

Don't rush it
