Georgetown at sticker vs. Fordham

Georgetown ranking: 14
Fordham ranking: 34

Georgetown COA: 53,130 x3 = TOTAL COA $159,390
Fordham COA: $52,532 -$30,000(scholarship) = $22,532 x3 = TOTAL COA $67,596.

I currently live in New York and want to stay. Interested in doing IP/other business law. If I went to Fordham I would most likely apply to transfer to NYU and Columbia after my first year. After working in business I eventually want to work in politics.

Some people tell me Fordham has an awful name, but I'm a great student and feel I will do well - will a Fordham JD really be a detriment to me in business law/politics?

Do you have living expenses paid for?

Either way, your COA doesn't include interest + 3-4% expected tuition increase per year.

Never go to a school with the stated purpose of doing so to transfer. You have no idea how your first year will go.

Never sign up to attend a school unless you would be 100% happy with graduating from that school. If you are contemplating transferring before you even attend, its problematic. Sure, its something to shoot for, but it very likely won't happen. So ask yourself whether you would be entirely satisfied with a degree from Fordham. Unless the answer is yes, then don't go.

Me personally, I would take Fordham in your circumstances. You said you want to stay in NY, and you will save 90K in doing so. And I've never heard anyone say that Fordham has a poor name. To the contrary, I've heard many people, even in the big firms, speak very highly of the school.

Do you actually have any idea what you want to do with your career? Your stated goals are so vague

I didn't realize how bratty my first post sounded - I know Fordham is a good school, I have also heard that you get compared most by the other schools in the city you went to school in. Georgetown: #1 in DC, Fordham: #3 in NYC. Your advice is really appreciated.

Fordham is #4. Cornell is basically a NYC school..

If you're such a great student and you'll crush everyone at Fordham and be able to transfer to NYU/CLS then I would have expected you would have better options than you currently do.

To be less snarky: everyone goes into school thinking that they will be in the top 10%, but 90% of them are wrong. You will be in a school filled with people that are just as smart as you, that will work just as hard as you, and have just as much to win/lose as you.

Yeah, but that subway ride from Ithaca to lower Manhattan is a killer.

I would say don't go to law school because you don't appear to really want to be a lawyer. If you want to work in politics or business then work in politics or business; a law degree to does little to help you in either and is a huge investment/relative waste of time for such goals.

Also why is cost of living not included above? Seems to be pretty important.

Georgetown at sticker is not advisable in really any circumstance, particularly in one where the person doesn't want to be in DC (or be a lawyer). Don't go to law school with the intent to transfer; terrible idea, generally. Fordham is OK for your goals but I am concerned about that COA. Also USNWR Ranking is completely irrelevant.

Give us your GPA/LSAT numbers and number of LSAT retakes.

If you can wait a year, get some experience, study for the LSAT and really kill it, you might be in a position to just go to a better school with money (pending info on your GPA and current score).

Both of these options are not great. GULC is better here but then again malaria is better than ebola.

3.5, 167 with 3 retakes with some background serious family health issues as an addendum to that. I would say I have above avg. softs, but am a K-JD.

Both schools list CoL to be $19,000 - $20,000 per year, so tack on $~60,000 to both and Georgetown will be ~$240,000, Fordham ~$127,000.

Well, do you anticipate your employment outcomes (or whatever else is driving your decision) to roughly twice as good at Georgetown?

Why would you possibly think that was not important? Assuming you are using loans to cover these costs of attendance (which are very low estimates for NYC and DC), and assuming you are going to be alive during the summer months, your COA will be far higher for both. Plainly, neither if justifiable from a financial perspective. Gun to my head, I guess Fordham, but that is way too much money to pay for it to not be a very risky endeavor.

Especially considering your goals, I would not go to law school.

You currently live in NYC and think this is correct? Lol.

Not to mention, your calculation doesn't include increases in tuition, cost of living, and interest accumulating.

$20,000 a year would barely cover rent in DC - GULC estimates $28,000 for non-tuition costs (and I imagine NYC is much worse)
And to reach that number, they assume you'll spend a whopping $380 a month on food :D

Seriously, OP, per LST the non-discounted cost for Georgetown is about 300K; Fordham will run you about 200K with your current scholarship offer. It'll probably end up being more, as these estimates are based on 2013 figures. Don't kid yourself.
