UVA v Mich v GULC

Post by JamaicanSaiyan8 » Fri Apr 17, 2015 12:50 am

Hey guys, deposit deadlines are fast approaching and I wanted to get some TLS advice before I officially deposited.

Please dont quote!

School/Scholarship/Debt at Repayment
UVA(60k)--$175,200
UMich(72k)--$162,796
GULC(90k)--$168,777

How you will be financing your COA, i.e. loans, family, or savings
Loans + minimal savings(5k minimum contribution 1L, none 2L(assuming no 1L SA), 15k(assuming 2L SA).

Where you are from and where you want to work, and other places where you have significant ties (if any)
I'm from NYC and want to work in NYC. I have zero ties to any other region.

Your general career goals
NY BigLaw -> In House...Potentially interested in clerking for a bit but this is something that is still in the development stages.

LSAT tries are maxed out and I'm pretty much sure that I will be matriculating in the fall. I have post undergrad experience in state govt(think compliance) so I am not a K-JD.

Waitlisted at Penn, UChi, and Columbia so I'll be riding those out until a final decision is rendered. Also waiting on an initial decision from NYU but I'm anticipating waitlist or rejection at this point.

Thanks for your input!

If people get you really paranoid about UMich's latest biglaw numbers, UVA.

If you realize that the chance for NY biglaw is probably roughly equivalent between UMich and UVA, UMich.

You're not in a bad spot. Go to your favorite of UVA and Michigan. GULC isn't worth 6k more than Mich if you want NY, and from there it's preference adjusted for the 12k extra UVA costs.

Echoing the above: either UVA or Michigan will get you where you're going. I'd go with UVA but either is defensible.

GULC is a nonstarter.

This is a lot of debt. Among these options UVA is the clear winner.

Agree that it's between Michigan & Virginia. Virginia's employment stats are better.

UMich and GULC are not giving you hugely different prospects, if anything, they're at least closer to each other than either is to UVA. UVA is the choice here if you don't mind living in the south for 3 years. Personally, I would mind, but that's just a preference.

Thank you guys for all your input! I am leaning toward UVA despite not being exactly thrilled about living in the south for 3 yrs.

Charlottesville is awesome and is barely the south.

For someone from NYC, that's certainly going to feel like the south haha. I don't think going to UVA would be an unwise decision though for OP regardless.

I don't think the OP got into Harvard though, so it's a non-option

OP- tell them what your offer is at Cornell

No

I think Duke is a much better option than Harvard here based on cost

OP- tell them what you got at Duke and Cornell so we can prove to them I'm right

Unfortunately, I was waitlisted at Cornell. I figured I would wait it out as well since they place pretty well in NYC. Although, I doubt I would be getting much in term of aid.

Edit: no interest in Duke, offer was a non starter.

Something doesn't add up here and I'll be damned if I don't find out what it is

What are your numbers OP?

And what'd you get at Dook?
