UF Law v Emory Law

Postby UFlaw99 » Wed Mar 25, 2015 2:15 am

Hi everyone, I need your help. I just completed my 1L year at Atlanta's John Marshall Law School applied as a transfer and accepted to both Emory Law and UF (Florida) Law.

I am from Atlanta, but before law school moved to Miami, FL and gained Florida residency so UF Law is giving me in state tuition and Emory Law is costing full sticker for 2 years.

Here are the details:

1) Emory Law tuition only = $105k for 2 years + Housing in Atlanta, Food, Transport, Books, Etc for 2 yrs = $40k -= Total COA $145k
2) UF Law tutition only = $44k for 2 years. + Housing in Gainesville, Food, Transport, Books, Etc for 2 yrs = $35k = Total COA $79k
3) I have been rejected from UGA and GSU law
4) I cannot stay at my current school (Atlanta John Marshall) b/c tuition costs for 2 yrs is $84k and COA = $124k

About Me:

I do not have a preference for big, med, or small law. I love both Atlanta, and Florida the same. Goal is to eventually (2-3 yrs after graduation) to open up my own law firm and work for myself. I have BS in Economics, MBA in Finance Top 50 school, and have 6 years of work experience in investments and finance.

So the question is should I go to UF Law ranked 47 with instate tuition for $44k tution cost or Emory Law for $105k tuition cost?

Voted UF. With those goals, minimizing debt should be your priority.

Emory- 19th
Florida- Tied for 47th

If I were in your shoes, I'd go to Emory. You can always make that 75k difference back. Go with the quality, bro! 8)

DaRascal, I know that Emory is 19th on USNEWS but on their ABA employment report 67 graduates had School Funded Jobs and 4 were unemployed out of 292 grads. That is 24.3% unemployment rate 9 months out for Emory Law grads.

http://law.emory.edu/_includes/documents/sections/about/ABA-documents/class-2013-employment-summary.pdf

Although, I do not expect to be unemployed but there is a 25% chance that I will end up jobless and with crushing debt at Emory. And then there are 44 students who ended up in the public defender or prosecutors office or other government clerkship making barely $50k a year. That is 15% percent in low paid government jobs and 25% unemployed which is now 40% chance that I will either be unemployed or have a low paid government job with crushing student loans at $1,950/mo for 10 years.

Is it really that much of a better education than what UF Law is providing at $44k... Please tell me if I am wrong or missing something. Thanks

UF is the right choice. Agree with others that minimizing debt is most important since you want to start your own firm. Also, your GA options from Emory won't be substantially different than your FL options from UF, since you have ties to both. Take the $$.
