What is a reputable personal injury / medical malpractice firm?

Not to get too caught up on other matters, but I would define reputable as a firm in which partners have recorded high settlements and are very knowledgeable in the field. Hence, they may be able to teach certain skills which would help propel your own career.

1) Why are you doing law school part time? Do you have a full time job that you can fall back on for the next five years while you try and build a personal injury practice?
2) My gut instinct is to tell you to never, ever go to Widener. Is there some reason Temple's part time program with a full scholarship isn't on the table here? What will Widener cost you over four years?

2) The answer to your question is "It depends, but in general yes, although not as much as it would matter in biglaw."

Don't go to Widener unless it's at no cost to you, and even then it's probably a bad idea. There are several decent part-time programs in Philadelphia, with Temple being the best option.

I realize many partners (boomers) at Philly firms are Widener grads, but that doesn't mean they are hiring Widener grads. It's a different market. If you want to be at a reputable or top plaintiffs firm, like Kline & Specter, you'll need to be a Penn kid or a top student with trial ad accolades from Temple/Drexel/Nova.

What Philly firms are you looking at?

Just one data point FWIW-the reputable PI/Med Mal firms (i.e., the ones that get the bulk of the catastrophic PI, don't advertise on billboards, start with good pay, etc.) that recruit from my school have roughly big law grade cutoffs. I've only seen 3 or 4, so I don't know how representative they are, but I remember because I was surprised. The cutoffs were all similar to non elite biglaw. I don't know about the Philly market, but if it's anything like here the firms doing high-level personal injury will probably recruit from Penn and top of the class at Temple. From a TTTT, my guess is you're much more likely handling fender-benders for some sweatshop at $40,000 a year.
