This thread is basically like the last sequence in Scarface, where Tony Montana is standing on top of the balcony and basically asking dozens of assassins to shoot at him.

Say hello to brianiac's little friend.

I hear people have this T14 mentality even for public service, ALL THE TIME. You've just become used to it because you spend so much time here and have literally thousands of posts so you can't see it anymore.
Please show some links. If it happens all the time, they should be easy to find.
Just go to the "Choosing a Law School" forum. If you can't find them there then you are a lost cause.
No shit Sherlock, like you pointed out...I have thousands of posts on this site. I know how the sub-forums work.

But when I look, I see threads like this (telling a dude to take $$$ at WUSTL or UIUC> Michigan) and this (which you posted in, fucker) that has quotes like the following:
jbagelboy wrote:Yes, rankings are irrelevant, but I can't in good conscience advise anyone to attend UF law. We need to know OP's LSAT. If they were admitted at Georgetown then they are qualified for offers with scholarship from Emory, maybe UT, definitely UGA/Bama. As for local roots and playing a PI ground game, OP can already lean on the Florida alumni network from their undergrad. I don't really understand how William & Mary became the only reasonably priced option and Gtown at sticker isn't in the mix. This needs more thought.
zombie mcavoy wrote:Yeah uf makes the most sense here. Rankings are irrelevant.
TheSpanishMain wrote: Anyway, rankings don't really matter, especially for jobs like PD. Go to the state flagship of the place you want to work (if that's FL, go to UF/FSU) so you can network/intern/extern like hell with Florida PD offices.
Isn't that exactly what you want TLS to tell people? What's the problem?

It is one of the biggest law schools in the country. There were over 500 students in my graduating class.
Its also getting bigger every year, through both matriculants and transfers.

Ignoring everything else for a moment, I'd like to know why this is your plan to the Senate. 54 Senators in the 114th Congress have law degrees. There are 29 Senators who attended a law school outside of their home state (Not counting John Cornyn. His JD came from a law school in Texas even though his LLM did not).

Two of these Senators are from Alaska which, until 2013 did not have a law school.

Mazie Hirono of Hawaii began law school in 1975, just two years after Hawaii's only law school opened and one year after it received provisional accreditation. I'm giving this one a pass, but count it however you like.

Seven of these Senators went to Harvard.

Three of these Senators went to Yale.

Of the remaining 16:

Three went to UVA. One went to Chicago. One went to NYU. One went to Michigan. Three went to Georgetown.

So when you take away all of the Senators who went to a T-14 or didn't have any law schools in their home state, you are left with Seven Senators. I think it's pretty dumb to go to law school with the intention of becoming a Senator anyway, but going to GWU instead of either a T-14 or a school in your state looks like it's just about the worst way to do it.

I am going into politics and will attend a school with excellent placement in that realm.
Tip O'Neill: all politics is local.

Go to your local instate Uni for free/really cheap and get involved with the local Dem/Rep/Green party of your liking.

No high faultin' school in the District is gonna win you an election back home. Nor will you make any political contacts back home.

OTOH, if you are a special snowflake, the DNC/RNC will snap you up quickly.

edited to add: OP when you actually start looking for a job, you'll quickly find that DC is (almost) as obsessed with preftige as is Wall Street. UVa grads will always have a leg up.

You TLSers are only concerned about the financial gain. You are not thinking about the life fulfillment gain of doing meaningful work, and the spiritual gain from following your calling.
Indy16 wrote:Also if you plan on just returning to your home state and building connections I don't understand why the "name brand" of a DC school has any real value to you. From what I've seen, it seems like many/most politicos go the state school route especially in state politics, which is where you'd be looking.

If you don't want to take the sincere advice in this thread (ignore the sarcasm and whatnot), then best of luck.
Yes but I see this as a long term play. GW may not matter in a local election. But I'm not just thinking about local elections forever...
Woah now, that's just a gross and unfair assumption on your part. I mean, come on, look at my avatar! Winnie the Pooh cares about dreams, man.

OP, even though I think you're a troll, I don't understand why you asked a professor you disagreed with and seem to have disagreements with, to write you a recommendation letter. If you only chose her because she's the Chair, then you are the one who is unable to distinguish between prestige and actuality. There was no other professor who could vouch for you? Seems strange to me and makes me think, even more, that you're a troll. At least you made the load screens while playing video games entertaining tonight.

Stepping out onto a shit-strewn limb attempting to qualify the 'sticker is bad decision' theme:

Sticker anywhere is 'bad' because anywhere you go, you pretty much need BigLaw to make it pay. Which means:

A. You don't do BigLaw and spend a crazy amount of time poor paying back debts while you 'live your dream.' = SUCKS
B. you didn't want to do BigLaw but have to and for years to pay things back = SUCKS
C. you think you want BigLaw but will have your soul ground to paste and/or you wash out anyway = SUCKS
D. you actually enjoy BigLaw, manage to get a stable career out of it either by lateraling out somewhere later or getting a profitable career by somehow making it to partner = LESS SUCK

D is the dream but hard to control for. Hoping to make partner is like hoping to become a federal judge at this point - it's almost ludicrous to plan for unless you are so well-prestiged and connected already. So you essentially have to 'know' that you will A. perform well, B. make it into BigLaw, C. ENJOY BigLaw work, D. not wash out before you pay your debts, and E. have a stable post-Law job after BigLaw into which you can have a stable career. On top of all this, you have to 'know' this before you even step in the door to law school.

This is crazy for a LOT of people. I would include you in this. BUT this is why TLS asks about personal info and personal goals before saying 't14 or bust' or anything approximating.

Paying sticker on a theoretical level is not suicide. It's crazy expensive but so is medical school. The real problem is the likelihood of a 'good' outcome relative to the cost you're putting in. There are people who can make it work, but it would be irresponsible to blindly endorse this tactic. I should know, I did exactly this before getting a righteous excoriation and further educating myself a bit.

This thread is based on a false premise. If you're not a troll, you are one of the densest, most obstinate, least self-aware posters I have ever seen. And the quoted paragraph is comedy gold. You have little hope.

brainiac the maniac: best way you can show us all the error of our ways is to go do your thing and report back on your success. It's your future you're gambling with, not ours - so go whatever and then you can come back and rub it in our faces.

But if you start telling little 0L's to 'follow their dreams' into the black screaming void that is full sticker at non-t14's, people will rightfully shit in your open mouth.

Are we also going to ignore the fact that only 6 senators have come out of GW Law ever (and, y'know, of the 5 that were elected, all 5 ran as democrats. the more you know!)

Anyone in local politics will tell you that going off and integrating yourself into the DC establishment is probably one of the worst possible options when trying to enter politics, but Brian is beyond reason and super entertaining so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

there's a pretty long list of former staffers who run for the House and win? Not challenging, just curious what you mean by this. Do people really get hit that hard for being "DC INSIDERS" in state elections?
