How important are they? Can they help overcome a non T14 school?

Of course. Someone graduating in the top 10% of Vandy/UT/UCLA/ and other T20s will have a great shot at big firms without needing any connections. Lack of ties might hurt you though.

It depends entirely on the connection and the firm. The connection could guarantee you a job, it could give you no boost whatsoever, and it could fall anywhere in between. My guess is that if you are asking TLS your connection is closer to the worthless side.

Most connections probably aren't good for anything more than a guarantee that someone will look at your resume. That's not nothing, but you'll still need the school and grades they want.
