Which is my best option?

Postby orab » Mon Feb 23, 2015 3:34 pm

Hello,

I'm listing the school that I'm considering so far. They are listed in the order of preference. Michigan, Georgetown and Vanderbilt will go up if I get scholarship from them. ( I'm expecting to get scholarship from Georgetown and Vanderbilt and will probably have to negotiate with Michigan)

I'm considering immigration and environmental law but corporate and criminal law are not out of the question.

I don't mind big law if I could get it but I'm OK if I don't.

I would like to practice in the Southeast but Texas is an option too.

I also was accepted to BU, BC , W&M, Alabama and FIU but I'll withdraw from these.

I also was wait-listed at Cornell, Virginia and Columbia and waiting to hear from Duke.

Thanks,

Tuition/ Scholarship/ Total Tuition/ COL/ 3 Years COA

Thread is premature because Vanderbilt hasn't released scholarship info yet (idk about GULC).

What are your stats and how many times have you taken the LSAT?

When were you accepted to Michigan? They usually send out scholarship offers about a month after acceptance.

Can you clarify? Is your scholarship at UT really $42,000/yr? If so Texas is a no brainer here why even wait to hear from Michigan of Cornell? Georgetown is gonna be stingy with money so I'd ignore them.

Seems to be down to UT and Vandy for me, of which UT is the clear winner at those prices. If you get money from UVA or Duke (if you get in) come back, but right now with Southeast or TX + environmental + immigration + <75k debt a graduation its UT al the way.

I was accepted to Michigan at the beginning of January, so the only option here is to negotiate because I did not get any scholarship.

I received and email from GULC and they said that by March 3, i should know about scholarships.

Thanks for the response. Yes it is 42,000/yr. That is why is in top of my list.

Which state would you like to practice in? Are you leaning more towards
big law than not?
I ask because W&M or Bama could make sense on a full ride. I also think your COA estimate is a little low because you haven't factored in tuition increases, loan fees, and interest accumulating while you are in school.

Have you seen the financial worksheets on LST? They are extremely helpful. They factor in all of those things I mentioned.

But if Texas is under $100,000 I don't think it's a bad choice. I would take Vanderbilt at equal costs if you preferred the southeast to Texas.

Yeah, I'm wondering the same thing. That is absurdly high.

Part of the scholarship is getting in state tuition. A $47,000 value. Bottom line, tuition around 8K/year

Considering you have no idea what job you want, minimizing debt is the best move, so --> Texas.

On the other hand, I may have missed it, but it's not clear if you have ties to TX. If you do, then that's probably the smartest play. If you don't, then you need to negotiate elsewhere.

Texas. But I'm worried because you seem to have no idea what you want to do. You're naming practice areas that are different in every way imaginable.

Do you like working in groups or alone? Do you want to be an expert or more of a generalist? Do you want to appear in court? Are you comfortable improvising in front of groups of people? Would you prefer to be competitive or collaborative? Do you want to do a lot of writing? Do you have any special skills or technical knowledge? Who do you want to help? And how do you want to help them?

Ask yourself these questions and many more. See which practice areas (if any) fit your personality, interests, and goals. I'm worried that you are going to law school because you're a fairly smart person, without a clear direction, who thinks law school will open up many interesting doors. That's a recipe for disaster. Please take some time to figure out what you want. You've got 3 or 4 decades to practice law, you won't regret taking a year (or 5) bumming around, trying different things, and figuring out what you want out of life.
