Eh... not really. I'm easily entertained.

You'd be surprised how boring the midwest can be.

Is Iowa a good school to go to if you want to find a job in Chicago, Milwaukee, or Minneapolis?

I'm up for working in Iowa or really anywhere in the Midwest, but I just want to know if it has a good enough reputation in those cities (particularly Chicago and Milwaukee).

If you're from the east coast and go to school in Iowa, you're almost certainly not getting a job in Milwaukee. That's a totally different area that you don't have ties to. Legal hiring doesn't work like that from what I have seen.

Oh no... so I'm basically screwed then. If I go to Iowa, it seems like I wouldn't find work in a Midwestern city outside of Iowa because I don't have ties (dumb), and I could only get a job in Chicago with exceptional grades.

im not from the midwest and established ties here. i think all it takes is having a gf or reason why you arent leaving. be adamant that that's your home now/have a gf from the midwest.

Haha ok, guess it won't be that hard to come up with something. I just want to make sure I'm not at any sort of disadvantage because I feel that Iowa is already only barely above that line between a good school and an average law school.

Do lawyers have to wear suits? I'm honestly more of a button down and jeans kind of guy. Wearing suits annoys me. :|

Yeah it's really harsh isn't it. Well, I suppose a work overall might do just fine as long as you're sporting a fantastic tie. I mean, Will Smith landed his job at his brokerage firm in jeans, covered in paint, so why not?

According to the Grisham novel The Street Lawyer, there are indeed legal jobs which no real dress code, although the pay is so low in the job he describes homelessness may be part of the package.

Haha I plan to litigate like Joe Pesci too. Did he spend a night in jail for contempt or am I misremembering that?

So we've got the magician's suit, the Michael Jackson's Moonwalker get up, and then I'm going to need some wacky, top hat dress down like the Mad Hatter from Batman (or the Hatter from Alice in Wonderland, if you please).

Nothing wrong with starting a fashion rebellion.

I neglected this thread for a while, but here's some updates:

I've been rejected by every T14 that's given me a decision so far because of some combination of low numbers, an impenitent C&F disclosure, my existence on TLS, and five LSAT takes.

Decisions to be made:

Iowa- COA: Living expenses so let's conservatively call it $30k factoring in my own finances and what I make over the summers.
Colorado- COA: $62,000 for tuition alone over 3 years, so let's call this $100k factoring in everything else. Can't negotiate.
Indiana- COA: Uncertain; assuming at least $, maybe $$, but not $$$. Let's call it $100k also for now. Negotiable.

Still waiting on: Duke, NU, and Wake Forest. D and N would obviously be sticker debt, and WF is taking forever for someone with competitive numbers for them, so I'm guessing no full ride.

Is the decision still Iowa? I've been thinking a lot about Colorado because I think it'd be my favorite place to live long-term of the three, but that debt is no joke.

Iowa will keep you in the Midwest. You might get Minneapolis, St. Louis, and Chicago in terms of cities. Otherwise, you're likely stuck in rural Midwest. Which wouldn't appeal to me, but you might. Just something to keep in mind

Colorado's bad outcomes compared to those rural bad outcomes are probably better. However, the debt is A LOT. And your 100k might not be the best estimate. I definitely wouldn't go over 100k. Probably not that high either.

I think the main consideration for me isn't really Mountain West vs. Midwest (I'm open to working literally anywhere) as much as it is "Will I be able to more easily pay off debt as a top student at Iowa or as a top student at Colorado?". You seem to be insinuating that since firm jobs in Minneapolis, Chicago, and St. Louis would be open to a top student at Iowa, that it makes the most sense financially for me to choose Iowa because my employment outcomes will be similar from both if I graduate around the same in my class at both places with the only difference being the $70-$80k in extra debt.

Iowa's.... LOOKING GOOD! :P

If UNLV were a T1 and I got a full ride, I'd easily choose it. Oh well, looks like the plane flights out of Des Moines and Chicago are relatively cheap to get to Vegas.

Think about Iowa for a bit, not exactly an area that embraces risk. I would suspect that the firms that will be hiring junior lawyers will be most interested in people that can at least convincingly pretend not to be high risk. Do you think that in three year of school you pick up this skill?

More than likely, the real answer for you is...

75$k at Indiana

Any chance I can use the Iowa full ride to get the other 75k? Part of me thinks Indiana is what it's all about. I feel negotiating won't work.
